Subject: Happy Holidays and a Bah-Humbug to boot

I guess it's that time of year again, the Holidays. In our house we celebrate Christmas, but I know others celebrate their holiday...some don't seem to celebrate any but that is their life. But just because I don't celebrate Kwanza doesn't mean others can't enjoy it. And the same goes for other holidays...just because one person doesn't celebrate it doesn't mean it doesn't exist and doesn't mean we shouldn't allow them to celebrate it or even encourage them by understanding their beliefs. Mostly because in a world that so many people have little to no values, we should be happy that alteast they believe in a holiday and celbrate it. Give them a "Thank goodness you have morals" Hi-5! I don't know.

But all that said...
I am still a manager at our local Golden Arches Dinner Club. In the years past we have always decorated our Lobby for the holidays. We have put up the decorations after Thanksgiving and take them back down two weeks after the start of the new year. Last year we painted the front windows with "Happy Kwanza" "Happy Channaka" (pardon me, it's 2am, I can't sleep or spell) "Merry Christmas" "Happy Holidays".

We felt we had our ground covered and tried to include everyone we could think of and convey a clear and cheery message. I hope we did a good job.

But this year we were told that we could have only winter decorations, no holiday related items! That was no easy task, let me tell you! Even the garland that we hung around the menu board to just be sparkly is pushing the envelope. But how many snowmen can we possibly have in a fast food joint that seats 200 people?

So ok, we pleased some people by not specifying any particular holidays. But now some employees and some regular customers are upset! And let's also take a minute to mention that in our small, small town we are about the only business to not have a holiday decoration theme.

I don't mind not decorating for the holidays at work until I thought about a few things.

1-We participated in the town's holiday parade. Why do that if we don't want to offend somebody by letting them know that we celebrate holidays?

2-We can wear "Santa hats" while working! That one really bothers me! We can't celebrate the holidays but we can serve a BigMac while in a Santa hat!?!?!?!? Why?

So now I am upset that I work for a company that won't celbrate the holidays but will promote the commercialization of them!

And I was told no when I asked if I could wear a Baby Jesus hat. After all, if there were no Jesus in the Christian beliefs, there would most likely be no Santa to take over the Christmas season.

Maybe I should just loosen up and go with the flow. But the flow seems to not be so flowy and easy to follow.

Michelle...in need of a map!
