Subject: George and Sally Smith, Gosport

I believe I can correct your information on George and Sally Smith of Gosport.

They are part of my extended family. Harriett Nancy Smith was known as "Aunt Harriett" to my grandmother. I have her dob in my great-grandmother's birthday book.

I believe that Sally Brigden is incorrect as George's wife. George Smith married Sally Beagley on 15 Dec 1801 at St Mary's Portsea. George Smith and his brother William, from whom I am descended, came from Portsea originally.

This is some of the research I have done:

I need to send for Sally's death cert. for verification. You will see that Sally Smith was already 85 in 1861, so this gives her an approximate date of birth of 1776.

It appears that George Smith died in 1837. I have located his will, and that of his brother William, and I am about to order them.

I hope this clarifies the situation!

In fact, Sarah Lucy Smith (daughter of George and Sally) married Joseph Sellwood on 28 Jun 1848 at Holy Trinity Gosport. They lived in Southampton, and had a daughter, also Sarah. See 1881 census.

Thanks for this information. That excludes most of the children I mentioned in the notes for George Smith. I didn't link any of the children christened in Gosport to the actual tree because of the uncertainty.

Can you confirm if the two girls, Lucy (1810) and Sarah Sophia Smith (1821), both Christened at Portsea, were also children of George Smith & Sally Beagley, or were they children of George Smith & Sally Tackell, who married 1807 in Portsmouth, or even another George & Sally Smith?
