Subject: Week Eight: 12 Miles

I may never walk again, but I finished a 12-mile run this morning! It was actually a really good run at first. But around mile 10, I started to fade. By that time, the sun was shining full-force. It was hot. It was humid. It was hell.

Due to the heat, the coaches had all the pace groups slow down or adjust their run/walk ratios. Instead of running 3/walking 2 like usual, we did 2:2, but quickened our pace during the runs to keep it at a 15-minute mile pace. I actually LOVED running faster for a shorter time. I'd love to do that every week.

The other bad thing was that the quad muscle I strained last week was really hurting again for this run. It turns out it may be due to my stride, which is kind of long. I'll try to shorten it and do more of a shuffle and see if that helps. On the plus side, I iced my shins for an extra long time before the run, so my shinsplints didn't bother me today.

Good news! I found a goo I can live with: Chocolate-flavored Power Gel. It has a brownie-batter thing going on.

My fundraising is going very well! I'm just under the $800 mark now. I've even received generous donations from complete strangers! It's amazing how supportive people can be. :-)

I'm looking forward to touring Whitman-Walker clinic in a few weeks to see first-hand how they use the money we runners raise.

Next week we have a short run (6 miles) to recuperate from this 12-miler. Then the week after we go back up to 14. I'll miss that run due to vacation, so I'll have to figure out a way to make it up. :\
