Subject: A Taste of PPPs?

Breakdown of FBPRO ’97 PPPs:

Two Profiles per game, 1st half/2nd half. Each profile is subdivided into time periods: Mins in half: >5; >2-5; >1-2; >:15-1; 0<:15. Profile is also sub-divided by field position: >DEF 5; DEF 5-35; DEF 35-OFF 35; OFF 35-5;
BUFFALO BILLS

STARS: QB Jim Kelly; HB Thurman Thomas, WRs Andre Deed, Steve Tasker, Justin Armour, TE Lonnie Johnson,
DEs Bruce Smith, Jim Jeffcoat, DT Ted Washington, LBs Brice Paup, Chris Spielman, Sam Rogers, Ss Henry Jones, Kurt Schulz, CBs Thomas Smith, Jeff Burris.

Buffalo: Very diverse offense. Uses many different sets but usually likes to pass from shotgun and run from I-formation. Formations include: Shotgun: (almost exclusively using 3 WR), Pro I, Offset I (weak), K-gun (1RB, 3WR), Ace (1 RB, 2 TE) (Very rarely), Near.

PPPs: Offense: RA: 25 RB 29 RC 5 PA 5 PB 15 PC 30
Defense: 28 19 4 27 18 4

This is by %, totals = 100. Of course, RA = Run Aggressive, PB = Pass Balanced etc, etc.

Here is a look at the exact BILLSO Game Plan as it appears in the game. A small picture is available for each play. Plays can be called up in a separate larger mode with player logic available for analysis in this larger mode. The logic tells the player what to do. The only way to see the lead player in any play is here. It works, but is cumbersome, to say the least. ((EG, to find out the intended target for play 6-3 368WIDE one has to close the profile box, bring up the play box, select the play which takes 4 clicks for a pass play. The intended targets are color coded. Click on the QB and see his logic for this play: 1. Pass – check receivers – HB1, WR1, WR3, WR2. This is shotgun formation, 3 WRs left, TE1 on the right side, next to the OL, HB1 behind T2 (next to TE). After snap, QB drops back 3 yds (now 10 yds deep) and checks for the HB out of the backfield right short, WR1 goes up 8 8yds and runs a deep slant route, WR2 runs a fly pattern but it slants toward the middle, and WR3 slips behind WR2 (pick!) and runs a deep left sideline route. That’s a lot to describe for 1 play?)) GENERALLY, the 1st 4 rows are run plays, then pass short, pass medium, pass long and goal line runs, then pass. This profile 1-1 <> 2-2 = Run Middle; 2-3 <> 3-4 are a mix RL, RM, RR; 4-1 <> 4-4 PSL, PSL, PSR, PSR; 5-1 <> 6-2 PMM, PML, PMR, PMR, PMR, PML. 6-3 <> 6-4 PLR, PLR 7-1 <> 7-4 PML, PML, PML, PML, 8-1 <> 8-4 PMR, PLL, PLL, PMR 9-1 <> 9-4 PSR, PLR, PMR, PSR 10-1 <> 10-4 PLR, PMR, PLR, PML 11-1 <> 11-4 PSL, PLL, PML, PSL 12-1 <> 12-4 PLL, PML, PLL, PSL 13-1 <> 13-4 PSR, PMR, PMM, PLR 14-1 <> 14-4 PMR, PLL, PML, PLR 15-1 <> 15-4 GLP, PSR, GLP, RM 16-1 <> 16-4 GLP, RM, RM, RM.

To the trained eye, this offense is built to call a play the defense would normally not see in a particular situation. It is more schizoid than most as far as arrangement. Witness a log file after a game using this profile, and expect to gains where you normally would not. IOW, Jim Kelly’s Buffalo Bills. This is one of many. I’ll have to clean it up, but I wanted to get one done just to see it. I have noticed that plays that start with a ‘3’ or a ‘5’ are shotgun plays. This means the ’98 assessment is not totally accurate for ’97. It is helpful to me at least. Jimmy, LBB.
