According to a Sep2004 report from the Urban Institute, there are approximately 4900 "heads of household" who on the 2000 census claimed to be both U.S. uniformed services veterans AND residing with a SAME SEX "unmarried partner" or "husband/wife" -- JUST IN THE CLEVELAND-LORAINE-ELYRIA AREA!

This doesn't account for single L/G veterans, L/G veterans who do not cohabit, nor B/T veterans residing with opposite sex partners. It also doesn't account for the Akron/Canton areas that are also serviced by the Wade Park or Brecksville VA Hospitals.

A new chapter of American Veterans for Equal Rights, Inc. is forming for the entire NorthEast Ohio region. Though touted as "Cleveland/Akron/Canton/Youngstown", this chapter is for the entire northeast quarter of the state.

This veterans service organization is for LGBT American veterans and their supporters. AVER's primary missions are:
• Ensure that LGBT veterans are treated fairly and are able to access their benefits without prejudice or interference.
• End all forms of discrimination in the U.S. Military.
• Abolish the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law.
• Provide a social support network and counseling avenues to those affected by the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law.
• End discharge codes that label sexual orientation.
• Provide wreath laying, Military Honor Guards at funerals and community events.

AVER is also partnered with SLDN and HRC on the "Conduct Unbecoming" and "Documenting Courage" projects, and affiliated with the Library of Congress for the "Veterans History Project".
