This year, let's make a conscious effort in monitoring the temperature and heat index for our kids that are out in the sweltering heat. A good way to do this is to log onto the National Weather Service website here. There's a place to type in city and state for local advisories.

Of special note, read the section under Weather Safety on how exposure to full sunshine can increase HI values by up to 15°F. If your child has P.E. in the afternoon, any sunscreen you applied in the morning will also have worn off by P.E. time. Now that we have our P.E. room expansion, I hope to see the classes out of the sun. There have been many heat related illnesses and deaths in the hot weather in the past, let's not take chances with our children when it can be easily avoided.
