Re: Litter on beach -- sierra, Sun, Jul 06 2003, 7:59:52
Are there specific areas on the island that are more affected than others? I'd hate to book my holiday at a resort that has litter along its beach

Personal I saw more litter where there were concentration of people. That is, resorts that have more rooms than other resorts have a lot more litter around their beach front. Hint: look for a resort that has more privacy - thus less human traffic going back and forth their front 'porch' and-or a resort with, say, 20 chalets versus one that can cater to anywhere from 40 to 80 rooms.
This hint is in reference to Pasir Pajang Beach - eastern side of Redang Island where there are 9 resorts at present.
Where else the south-eastern side of Redang island only has 4 places of accomodations, including a camp site.
The Northern side of Redang has only one resort - not rustic, instead almost a full-service hotel for those who can't stay away from cable t.v., room-phone, personal daily newspaper, concrete and tar-paved walkways, things like that.

Re: Litter on beach -- Aziz A.Shariff, Tue, Jul 22 2003, 15:27:20
Yes, the litter on Pasir Panjang...a crying shame. It is us, the visitors, who should set the example and be more responsible. When we see a plastic bottle or some form of litter nearby, would we want to pick them up ourselves and dispose the proper way? We can do that you know. We dont have to be mere observers and whine about it. If all of us do that wouldn't it be good?
Well, again, to most people, its always about Pasir Panjang and the imperative for keeping it preserved and pristine. What about the villages and other parts of the island? What about the Marine Park even? I believe some of us may just cry our eyeballs out after seeing how they have been living amidst so unkempt an environment - for decades.
Lets go further afield in Redang. It is a beautiful place, warts and all.

ya, couldn't be more agree with Aziz's idea of help to
pick up those rubbish instead of "deploying" a
beach-patrol-troop, fine those who little or maybe publicly
humiliate those who litter,,, let's make this wonderful
paradise as another "FINE" island :)
as usual, for those who growth up in full-CONTROL world,
what is better than CONTROL CONTROL CONTROL!!!
Freedom? only when the Big Brother tell you what is cover
under that clause :P
no heart feeling ok, this is a FREE World with Freedom to
speak, as long as no HARSH words involve :))
(Oppp~~~ hopefully my msg will not cause Alex's database
crash and data lose again :P )

Re: Litter on beach -- Alex Kang, Wed, Jul 23 2003, 5:01:24
Were you there over a weekend? And which part of the beach are you referring to?
When I was there over a weekday, the southern beach (in front of Reef, Laguna & Beach) was really nice and free of litter. Of course, there were few people around too. I didn't go to the northern side, so can't comment on that.
Most times when I'm there peak season in June, the beach is not as nice as my recent trip, so it does sound like someone is cleaning up when the weekend crowds leave, or at least I hope so - better not be because the tide simply carries the litter out to sea...
It's hard to change people's irresponsible habits unless it's a life & death thing, like curbing spitting habits during the SARS outbreak. Even then, when the circumstances return to normal, people go back to their old habits - I just saw a guy spit along the road today.
At least those of us who know the message of conservation can start by setting a good example to others. When they see us pick up litter, hopefully they'll follow too and it'll lead to opportunities to share & educate. For example, whenever I refrain from eating shark fins at wedding dinners, it always leads to active discussion and people go away a little bit more educated about inhumane de-finning practices which affects all species of sharks, including the harmless whale shark.
Visitor education is the best way to address problems like littering, stepping on corals etc. Resorts can and should play a bigger part in educating their visitors and reminding them of do's and don'ts.
