Re: Get a diving cert at Redang or Tioman? -- Samuel, Wed, Jul 31 2002, 17:39:41
Hi all, thks and appreciate your input. Vivian & I have been thinking of getting our basic cert looong time ago, hindered only by our own schedule, that is why we want to take "2 in 1 thingy" during our one week trip to Redang from Sing.
I(absoulte beginner question :))noticed for the same course different dive centre has :
1)diff duration : 4D/3N; 5D/4N & 6D/5N...r the diff due to the intensity of the course or else?
2)diff cert : PADI or NAUI...same content and recognition?
Thanks
Samuel

Hi Samuel,
I was told that the shorter duration one like the 4D/3N is really cramped, you have to take lessons, watch video clips, and then take a test. This is here say... wish someone with first hand experience share their info with you.
Was told also that PADI is just another cert... Most I talked to have PADI, only come across one that's not PADI.
Good luck! :)

Re: Get a diving cert at Redang or Tioman? -- Mark, Mon, Aug 05 2002, 19:32:05
Forget about getting your license in Tioman. Basically they have cramp the lessons (or should I say cut material) to fit into a 3D2N package. For basic diving course, you need at least 4D3N on the island.
Padi and Naui are just one of the standards used in the diving world. Padi orginates from Australia and Naui from America. Both of them essentially similar.
Important thing to note is the dive school. Go for a reputable one. If you want to know, contact me via email.
Regards
Mark

Re: Get a diving cert at Redang or Tioman? -- Alex, Wed, Aug 07 2002, 16:16:23
My 2 cents worth...
1) The school/diveshop running the course is probably the most important one if you want to ensure 'proper' training. I have heard horror stories about diveshops cutting corners, even to the extent of PADI-basic certified divers who don't know how to swim!
I did my Basic & Advanced NAUI course with Mako Sub-Aquatics (Singapore) through my company and even before we were allowed to start the Basic course, we had to swim 200m non-stop (any style), tread water 15 minutes and swim 20m underwater on a single breath. We also had to get certified by a medical doctor specializing in hyperbaric medicine (in my case even went for head X-rays to check my sinus cavities).
I should think that based on the course syllabus, one would need at least 4D to complete the Basic course (theory, confined & open water). If they take longer, it's because it's less intense (I did my basic over 2 weeks, spending 4 2-hr nights on theory, 2 3-hr nights in the pool for confined water, and a 3D/2N weekend at Pemanggil for open water).
2) Not much difference between PADI & NAUI though PADI seems to be more popular. Syllabus is similar, although during my NAUI Basic, we did rescue as well (except luckily didn't have to carry the guy up the boat/shore). So I think different schools/instructors might sometimes teach more or extra stuff.
3) As for place to do the course, cheapest would be in Singapore waters - you'll get extra 'low-visibility' skills training :)! Doing it in Malaysia costs more, but that depends where you go - places like Dayang, Aur, Pemanggil are probably cheaper than Tioman or Redang. But at least you've got clearer waters and have the chance to see interesting marine life.

Our Trip to Redang -- Samuel Lai, Mon, Aug 12 2002, 19:09:18
Hi all, thks very much for your sharing.
Vivain and I just came bk from our trip to Redang and had a wonderful diving experience...we got our NAUI Open-Water Cert as well. We enjoyed our diving course very much, the instructor made our learning both solid and enjoyable...its so much better than any snorkelling that we've been doing over the years...yes it costs more but it gave us a very desirable start, we both love to do more diving...the marine life we had observed simply unforgettable, many 1sts in our life : blk-tip shark, sea turtle, angel fish, clown fish, sting-ray...etc.
Two things will cause us to revist Redang :
1) For diving and we will go bk to the same diving instructor.
2) Visit our friends we made during our stay there.
Three things we will plan differently for our next trip :
1) Booking through agents at K.T may well cut the cost by as much as 1/2 from the pkg, though a little bit more work for ourselves.
2) Check with the resort if they would let us do late check out for the last day, otherwise we will waste our whole day at K.T waitting for the returning coach rather than have more fun at the island.
3) Services/food provided had been disappointing for the price we paid, a few foreign couples who travelled a lot in the region also agree, so we will select a different resort but still go bk for the same diving instructor for our next visit...imagine you could not take more than one chicken wing each person for the BBQ dinner and not seeing the management staff talking to you after you paid your bill upon arrival until your departure! But diving saved our trip... :)
Hope every one who will visit Redang would have wonderful experience.

IMO - Good idea to put it on the forum for others to see. -- tangotee, Wed, Aug 14 2002, 19:11:20
I think it is a good idea to put the name up but then again I understand the implications, someone else less honest go do malice to a good resort...
I am in the process of booking my stay with a resort at Redang. I would appreciate if you could reveal the resort to me via e-mail. My e-mail is as listed as such but kindly remove the "NOSPAM" portion of the address.
Thank you Samuel Lai
I agree full heartedly with this quote from a Bali forumite:
