Subject: How is Coral Redang?

Hi there,

Am planning to stay 4D3N in mid-Sept at Coral Redang. Could someone please give me some feedback about this place? Also, is it still ok to go there mid-Sept? Have been looking forward to the trip for ages! Thanks.

Hi MSC!

After 12 hours on the road, we arrived back to Singapore from Merang Jetty at midnight this Thursday morning! Now we're back at work, bummer! We took the 3D2N package with one additional night from 24Aug to 28Aug. There were three of us and we agreed that we liked the resort. The toilet is somewhat tired. My wife and I asked around and it seems all the toilets are about the same - they need to redo the toilet - they're just old, yet functional and really no big deal for those who are really rustic. The food was so-so at first but after comparing it to another neighbouring resort on day 3, I think the buffet spread was darn good comparatively for a rustic island resort (can't compare to Berjaya - different class with VERY different pricing). I enjoyed the breakfast the best, boy, day 2 - sun-sided up, day 3 - scramble, day 3 - omelette.

The beach landing was not as wet I as I had envisioned - the boat was able to bring us in pretty close - 3 metres from dry sand and about thigh depth of water. The resort crew carried our bags to the front of the bar where the check-in process was being carried out. We were last as I had started talking photos of our landing - just could not wait. The water was crystal clear at 10:50 A.M. and sand was creamy white. We saw later in the day and subsequent days that the lower part of Pasir Panjang beach was littered with dead pieces of coral. It is a stark difference to us that we had such a good beach landing compared to *some* of the other resorts which has strew of dead coral AND litter! Day 1 at Coral Redang will also be in my memories: sun was shinning, clear sky, a good clean stretch of beach, did not notice any litter (yet), hardly any dead corals, creamy white powdery sand. Boy... I wish I could be working there for a month or two. Really nice and memorable beach landing - I most definitely will remember. The beach was way much better than what me and the missus experienced on Lembongang island, Bali. Two thumbs up.

A really nice welcome, one of the frontdesk folks, knew my name and call for me - a really nice surprise, she brought us to the bar and gave us our welcome drink. Briefed us about our package, and food arrangements. Pointed us to our room, a semi-detached, which is the hut beside the resturant and overlooking the swimming pool. Room 13 and 14. We had the room 13, facing and adjacent to the standard rooms. Nice view of the 'wild' life, one will surely noticed the squirrels right away, small and cute little critters with red furbelly and red-ended tails - no bigger than your hand excluding the tail... tree frog hanging onto coconut tree leave... man... I still see it. Okay back to reality... your question was? :)

First impressions: the bedding was good, neat and clean floors, three tall window frames allowing natural lighting and a nice view of a fanua outside. Missus and I headed straight for the toilet - the first thing I saw was the showerhead was position below my chest level, there is single partition separating the shower area from the toilet. I wondered why? Apparently, the showerhead was cracked allowing water to spray choatically - very difficult to keep the dry area dry. Single partition? After a while, the tile leading to the basin get wets as well. Water heater comes with a booster pump, never used one before. It made a lot noise when in use. I got used to it after day 2.

Walked (no phone) to frontdesk, asked for showerhead replacement and change of burnt-out light bulb for bedside lamp - done in 15 minutes flat - how is that for service. Brand new showerhead, exactly like the broken one - except it works perfectly fine with 4 different spray patterns - love it! No regrets getting it done within the first hour we arrived. The only thing is I did not asked for a toilet bowl spray - didn't think it was part of the current set-up. Evidently, each toilet bowel comes with spray, unknown to me at the time - there was a spray holder but no spray. Day 4, I used the resturant toilet and each one comes with a spray.... well, if you into using water to clean up, you gotta have the spray, I sure missed it. ** Just some humor based on actual facts here :) **

Funa along the property was well-kept. Pretty flowering shrubs and short coconut trees - the longer one tend to be a safety hazard.

At the back of the resort there is a path leading to a jungle trail to Berjaya Beach Resort - took us about 1 1/2 hours with 12 stops for photoshots and observations. We got 'lost' at the last 200 meters - that added another 45 minutes before Dad and I found ourselves at Berjaya's beach. I did not realize how accessible the jungle trail is from Coral Redang. If you're into the jungle thing, funa and insects, this is a plus point - easy accessibility, the other resorts could possible add an additional 200 to 300 meters of jungle trail.

Room 21 - semi-detached - seafacing (50% viewable) - a tad further away from the resturant. FYI.

Dive Centre - great crew - english speaking guides e.g. Ayie & Hasan; good boatmen e.g. Joli - friendly folks with good knowledge about the best snorkelling sites - we're not divers BTW; accommodating - Dive Master Malcom suggested Turtle Bay, we asked to be taken to Marine Park and he scheduled it for us. We now see what other folks were saying - Marine Park today is overrated - yes, there is plenty of fishes but living coral with clown fish is beyond safety lines. Along with the thousands (literally!!!) of fishes, there was about a hundred people in and out of the water. Plus you have to pay 5 Riggit per person. Marine Park is not as natural as other snorkelling sites but definitely 'user friendly'. For us it is one time thing - we will aim for other snorkelling site recommened by the Dive Centre next time we visit Redang. We did not get to see the giant grouper or Morey eels *sigh* BUT - manage to see one anemone in the last 10 minutes at Marine Park with 3 clown fishes. I dive to get a closer look and the alpha clown fish just came charging up to me - protecting it home - how brave and cute the clown fishes are! No contact, I stopped to resurface and the little bugger retreated back to its bed. My first time seeing clown fish and anemone in the wild.

Marine Life: Day 1, 2, 3 - snorkelled at northern part of Palau Tengah - easily accessible - good number of fishes and variety, living coral a bit ways out - mostly dead corals or rock nearer to shore. Last day, day 4, before boat heads off at 10:30 AM, snorkelled southern side of Palau Tengah, managed to see 2 baby black-tipped sharks, wife saw a turtle, short distance of about 100 m from Coral Redang - very difficult to access - beach and shoreline littered with dead broken corals.

Overal, Coral Redang is a definite repeat for us, we would like to see the toilet done up more though. A/C okay - tad noisy, water heater and revolving ceiling fan good condition - thumbs up, mini-fridge very good condition - TWO thumbs up. Really pretty stretch of beach from Pelangi Beach, Coral Redang Island upto Redang Holiday Villa - THREE thumbs up - not much litter, less obvious than the middle part of Pasir Panjang Beach.

Enjoy your planning and don't be afraid to ask for stuff like additional pillows, we did, they pretty accomodating. Cheers!

GOOD article, enjoy reading it.
ai-yah.....can't be too fussy about the facilities
and food....it is the MotherNature that important :)
if it was as developed as those resorts at Batam,
Bintan, Bali, Phuket.... then would it be
Paradise Island any more, isn't it ??

Yeah, I suppose living too long in the comforts of home has spoil me somewhat. I been through worse toilet facilities before or worst no toilet facilities at all, just mother nature and good ol' chunkol in hand!

Error in my posting: reference to Palau Tengah (no such island) was meant to be Tanjong Tengah located center of Pasir Panjang (beach).

Thanks so much for the detailed reporting! I'm looking forward to the trip.

[> [> [> [> Noise at Berjaya Redang -- tangotee, Wed, Sep 04 2002, 1:08:23

Hi MSC,

We arrived at Tanjong Dalam Besar which is the stretch of beach next to (on the right side of Berjaya facing sea, i.e. north) Berjaya beach (Tanjong Dalam Kechil) at 6 P.M. We emerged from the jungle and from here I could barely make out the floating pontoon-jetty belonging to Berjaya.

At the back of the beach, we walked to a road that climbs up a hill that meets the entrace of Berjaya. I did not hear any construction going on. Bear in mind, the other reports were much earlier on. Our date and time at Berjaya was on August 26th, 6 to 7 P.M. As it turns out it was a Thursday and Thursday is weekend for Kulau Terrenganu. So I can't really tell if the construction is finished or it is the end of the day and the works have stopped, or it could just be the weekend for them and there is no works. Definitely quite, I have to confess I don't recall seeing any construction, may be a road leading to the new site.

This much I can say, if I was to stay at Berjaya, I most definitely will try to get a room closest to the beach and pool - barely recall seeing a construction road that still exists between Aima Grill Fish and guard room.

I took a digi shot of the property map and I *think* I see room 5604 which is a corner unit diagonally facing the pool and beach (cornering pointing north-east). May be you could request for this unit or one of the other 3 units in this chalet, there is also another 4 unit chalet right infront of this chalet, can't make out the room number though. There is no construction visible to us when we were on the right end of the Berjaya beach (nearer the pontoon-jetty).

Our boat ride came at 7:10 P.M., so from 6 o'clock till then, we heard nothing but surf, locals playing soccer on the beach, folks in the pool and families with children on the beach. It was a peaceful visit for us. Remeber though, this is late evening AND it was a Thursday (like our Saturday or Sunday).

Hi again tangotee,

You mentioned about visiting Berjaya Redang, how was the noise from the renovation/extension? I was planning to stay there, but was advised against it due to possible disturbance from the renovations. What do you think? Thanks for the info, mate.

[> [> [> [> Update: Berjaya Chalets near pool & Coral Redang -- tangotee, Wed, Sep 04 2002, 17:50:12

4 unit chalets I referred in earlier post, is actually 4 units per floor. Each chalet near the pool should be 2 stories high, thus 8 corner units per building. Chalets are not so rustic - modern type resorts like NTUC chalets only dark-woody look on vertical surface - probably timber with dark varnish. Compared to Pasir Panjang resort, modern looking, a little too close for comfort. For those who like hotel style accomms, this is it...
- room T.V.,
- cellphone coverage - full strength - confirmed network digi 1800, others - unknown, have to wait for M1 phone bill;
- resturants
- room phone,
- fridge
- etc.

Sighted wild monkeys and a baby sheep up the hill pass with rough tar-road leading to Tajong Dalam Besar, direction: east, south-east of Berjaya resort, at security/guard house, hang a left, distance: 350 to 400 meters to Tg. Dalam Besar beach.
