My mother (Eleanor Speirs) worked in the Shawfield bakery, Main Street Bridgeton. My parents (Gavin and Eleanor) We lived across the street at 185 Main Street. All the stores were in the street Cairns the grocer the fish shop Gormans the butchers the dairy the pub Carolas ice cream Gizzies, the chip shops, my parents owned the Scottish Fish Restaurant on the Main Street. The busiest time was when Shawfield dogs were over, and my parents could time when to get the fish and chip pans ready for the rush of people. The Wee Royal picture house was always busy at the matinees on a Saturday morning and we would get squeezed in big long benches and eventually ended at the end of the bench and everyone kept pushing and you had to get another seat because you would get pushed off the end of these big long benches, all the kids had so much fun. Does anyone remember Donnellys meetings? It was a little mission hall at the Savoy street, across from the Wee Royal. It was so nice they would make tea at intermission and we would hear tales from all the places they had traveled to. I was back home about ten years ago and I did not recognize any part of Bridgeton, it has changed so much. I worked in Lairds fancy box factory, and in my parents fish and chip shop. I always remember my dad would only buy haddock, and they were so big when you put them on a plate you had to put the chips on top because the fish covered the plate. They worked so hard and such long hours. The tenements were all so clean, and everyone had to take their turn of washing the stairs. On Halloween my mother had lines of children all down the stairs and the children would all come in and sing a little song, or say a poem, my mother used to make trays of candy apples and lots of candies and cakes for all the children. She used to go to the steamie on Ruby Street (I think) and there was a big boiler in the back for washing the clothes. If anyone remembers this it would be fun to hear from you. Eleanor
