The most important technique I can think of is having reslife, SPLAT, SA sponsored social events especially within the first week to first few weeks to get new students to meet each other. This is where they get introduced to one another and friendships can be made. I also beleive that the upperclassmen have a wealth of knowledge and experience to offer the new freshman so it's very important to mix them up so they can interact better. You also may have to create separate activities to cater to the needs of certain groups to keep interest level high in reslife sponsored activities.
