Police attack anti-Nazis as far-rightists march in Berlin
BERLIN (Reuters) - German police turned water cannon on anti-Nazi demonstrators Saturday after violence erupted at a rally called by the far-right National Democratic party to protest against government plans to ban it.
Police in Berlin cancelled the final two-hour segment of the scheduled five-hour protest after a group of 500 counter-demonstrators blocked the route of the 2,000-strong march and pelted the right-wingers with firecrackers.

''We stopped the demonstration because we could no longer guarantee the safety of the marchers,'' a police spokesperson said.

Police put the right-wing demonstrators onto special trains at a nearby station. Police said some people had minor injuries.

Authorities in the capital mobilized a force of some 4,000 police to guard against possible trouble.

Protected by helmet-clad riot police and jeered by hundreds of anti-fascists chanting: ''Nazis out,'' the rightists marched three kilometres to the rally site where they criticized government plans to ban them.

Germany Cannot Ban You! read one poster carried by marchers.

Other protesters, some in their early teens, carried banners reading: Germany for Germans'' and chanted: ''Get out foreigners!,'' as they waved German flags.

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's government, backed by parliament, has asked the country's highest court to ban the National Democratic party and thus block it from receiving state campaign funding.

The government gave warning failure to act now might lead to the emergence of a new Adolf Hitler. It may be years before the court makes a ruling.

Parliament's President Wolfgang Thierse spoke to a crowd at a counter-demonstration nearby, where protesters chanted: ''Fight fascism everywhere'' and ''Protect the synagogues, not the NPD.''

One banner read: I Want to Live in a Country Where Jews Aren't Afraid to Live.

It was a reference to attacks against Germany's small Jewish community.

''We are gathered here for a terrible reason … the NPD is using Berlin again for a march of their brown (Nazi) movement,'' Thierse said.

The rally was the party's fifth this year in Berlin. Unlike past rallies this time they were not allowed to march to the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of German unity and well-known landmark. Bystanders were amazed the demonstration was even allowed.

''The fact that the government did nothing to prevent this rally from taking place makes me feel ashamed to be German,'' said Maria Jost, 30.

For one elderly man, the demonstration brought back unpleasant memories of the Hitler era.

''These young people don't know what they're talking about,'' said Werner Mittelstaedt, 76, who was in the Hitler youth movement.

''I lived through the Nazi era and we mustn't let it happen again.''

Police detained one marcher for giving the outlawed stiff-armed Hitler salute. Another right-wing youth headed for the rally was attacked and badly beaten by four hooded left-wing activists, police
