Subject: crosses and their significance
Crosses have significance... their symbology and history especially.
Buffy wore a rather new and large and very obvious cross in beneath you...
It's called a dagmar cross..
I think that if you figure out it's meaning... you'll be very happy.
ta.

It's meaning??? -- Lijdrec, 03:00:51 10/04/02 Fri [1]
I'll have to take your word for it that it is a Dagmar. Definitely a Byzantine design to the cross she is wearing, and the shape appears to be that of a Dagmar Cross.
So the Dagmar Cross is named for Queen Dagmar, the wife of Waldemar II., king of Denmark (d. 1213) on whose corpse it was found around 1619. It is of Byzantine design and workmanship, and is of enamelled gold; on one side is the Crucifixion, and on the other side the half figure of our Lord in the centre, with the Virgin and St John the Evangelist on. either side, and St Chrysostom and St Basil above and below.
So, ok.... what's the significance. The various Saints that appear on it, or the Byzantine design because the woman that died early on was in Istanbul (Constantinople, capital of Byzantium)?

It's Istanbul, not Constantinople -- Glory, a They Might Be Giants fan, 21:22:56 10/04/02 Fri [1]
Why they changed it, I can't say. People just like it better that way.

*sigh* I knew no one would get that. -- Glory, 11:47:07 10/05/02 Sat [1]
Don't mind me, Lij....I'm just quoting a silly song by one of my favorite bands. It's called Istanbul (Not Constantinople):
Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night
Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be waiting in Istanbul
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way
So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks

Meaning - you might want to save this for future reference -- A.P., 11:25:38 10/05/02 Sat [1]
Well, this is all I could find:
"The Dagmar Cross symbolizes to us our calling."
In memory of the dead queen and her baby, the Dagmar Cross has been given ever since to all Danish baby girls, wishing them a long and prosperous life. To make such wishes come true the cross must be given away, normally in connection with the first communion, by the owner, to someone less fortunate in life than herself.
As it turns out, Queen Dagmar was buried in the Cathedral of Ribe. [The Cathedral of Ribe] is framed by an inscription which reads [in translation] "St. Mary, Joseph, Chist the Crucified, Nichodemus, St. John - The king dies, she weapes, the beloved moarnes, the guilty prays"
I leave the analysis as an intellectual exercise, besides I did all the work of finding the information! :P

one more but I can't translate it -- A.P., 11:37:06 10/05/02 Sat [1]

I've tried online translators but no luck so far, they don't translate this - not that I even recognize the language...
