All my life I have been proud of being American. Like most people of the world, I have had a tremendous sense of patriotism. I realize that other people feel the same about their nations, but I believed in my heart that my America truly was the best country on earth.

Recently I have begun to question that. I long for a small quiet place where character is still valued, where TV commercials don't promote dishonesty, and where TV shows don't glorify rudeness and immorality. I didn't feel ashamed of America, just worried about this land and the people in it.

But those videos made me feel ashamed of being American. I want no connection whatsoever with the soldiers who are committing such acts. I don't want to share any citizenship with them.

A new reason to weep for America.
