Since I live VERY close to the Canadian border, I have been watching with interest the new requirement that will go into effect in a year or two, that you will need a passport to reenter the US after being in Canada. You can imagine all the commotion that is causing around here... a lot of Canadians shop around here and many, both US and Canadian, see this as something that is going to hurt the ecconomy. I heard yesterday that Bush as actually responding to that concern and some altenatives are being looked into. I actually don't mind the passport because I have one, but it could cost $$$$ for others. Currently you only need a drivers license or birth certificate. I don't like the Patriot Act either, but I do believe in strong borders. The Canadian border has been a problem too. I don't know exactly what the the solution is, but I have to say, that I have to agree with Bee about the profiling issue. Until we reach a point were the enemies are able to recruit individuals that don't fit the current the profile of the those who have been know to cause all the troubles (sorry Jean, I guess I am pointing fingers as different ethnic groups again), I say we watch those coming into and out of this country who fit the profile of one who might be up to mischief. That will enable most ot the rest of us to get on with life. It IS unfortunate and unfair to those under suspision who are perfectly righteous individuals...I don't know how else we can secure our borders though, without enforcing more invasive methods on everyone (got to say here, I love those "Minutemen" on the southern borders). I wish SOMEONE could come up with a better solution.
