When I took my new pups to a puppy kindergarten class the puppy teacher told us that when she got a new rescue (she rescued dobermans) she would spend about 15 minutes each evening with them in a separate room - just her and the dog for the first month or so that she had them (her husband helped with keeping away any interruptions). No noise, no other distractions, soft lighting and she would talk softly to the dog, pet it slowly and say his/her name gently. This was her love/bonding time to let the dog know it was special, it was loved and give the dog the time to become familiar with her; her voice, her smell, etc. She was telling us that she had come across some pretty mean Dobermans due to how they had been treated. I know cresties aren't dobermans, but even these precious sweet little ones could perhaps be helped with this type of time spent with them - to help heal their little broken hearts and spirits and to learn to trust a human. Hope this may help.
