I noticed this on my computer too... I picked up the shareware program Waterfall 1.23. It reduces processor temperature through some method I can't remember and subsequently reduces fan usage... it hardly ever comes on now, and I notice no slowdown or problems with anything... not the specs for the fan, but I hope this helps.
