Dennis -

You may really want to try a program called 'rain' or
'waterfall.' i do not have the link handy but they are
both free programs from the same company. go to deja.com
and do a search in comp.sys.laptops and you'll find it
pretty quickly.

both programs work by signaling the CPU to halt when it
isn't busy doing other things. this cools down you CPU,
and consequently reduces the time the fan is on. this will
also increase the life of your laptop. in fact,
i've been using 'rain' ever since i bought my SE and
the only time the fan comes on is if i am running a very
heavy program like MATLAB - otherwise the machine is
totally silent. hope this helps,

LL

(if you have trouble finding the program i think i have
the URL around somewhere - email if you need it)
