Sounds like you are having the same problem that I did with the suspend. Of the four machines that I had (1 purchase and 3 replacements), 3 of them had the exact symptoms you describe (the 4th suspended and resumed perfectly but the USB was bad).

For the battery, try removing the APM drivers and then rebooting (should detect and reinstall automatically. See my reply to Garett for the steps.
