By now you may have seen the message from weirdkid2@aol.com in comp.sys.laptops.

I did a bit of basic sleuthing and this is what I came up with.

The link on the Transmonde site leads to ASE Technologies (USA) i.e. www.aseusa.com

ASE Technologies (USA) is now supposed to handle warranty and service issues.

Go to www.register.com and do searches for details on who registered the domain names www.transmonde.com, www.aseus.com, and www.aseusa.com. It is an eye-opener.

Basically www.transmonde.com and www.aseusa.com are the same company. Evidence is the fact that they both have the same physical address and the *exact* same domain servers.

Interestingly www.aseusa.com was first registered on July 29th, 1999. This is about 2 weeks before Transmonde shut down. That probably gives you an idea of when the *final* decision was made to shut down Transmonde. Therefore any communications after that date by the *senior* management at Transmonde to customers was possibly morally misleading. They pretended every thing was peachy even if it wasn't. Please note that all employees may not have known of the impending closure.

ASE (USA) (www.aseus.com) on the other hand is probably a totally separate division. They have a separate physical address and different servers. Comments that weirdkid2@aol.com reported from ASE (USA) are overstated. They are probably not aware that a sister operation has been renamed.

What does all this tell us? Prior to July 1999 ASE Technologies (USA) did not exist. Since both ASE Technologies (USA) and Transmonde share the same physical address they are basically the same operation (minus some unfortunate employees). All unreturned laptops are probably sitting in the same building. Your laptops and invoices (Jessica) were not passed to an "unknown entity".

At current ASE Technologies (USA) does not *appear* to have any other business then to provide service to Transmonde's client base.

Essentially you are dealing with same operation, only now they have a new name and they don't have to provide technical support.

Is this a good thing? We'll have to wait and see.

Please note that I don't own a Transmonde laptop. I *was* a potential customer.
