I don't think installing another DVD player will work (though I guess it wouldn't hurt to try). The hardware MPEG-2 decode has a Sigma Designs chip (MPEG-2) on it. The company who made the DVD player was also Sigma Design. I tried the DVD player for the never-release Vibrant XLe, but it wouldn't play. I've heard other people have tried installing other DVD players (REALmagic Hollywood vs. REALmagic Ventura) but it didn't work. I've never personally tried it, so I can't tell you any details.
