Date Posted: 15:10:51 12/07/02 Sat Mike & Becky I think I remember the incedent Bill is referring to, but I'm a little perplexed why it needs to be brought up now. Why is there a need to have a defining moment from high school? We were the "class of '84", probably no better or no worse than any other "class of '84". Maybe a few idividuals had defining moments, I'd guess most didn't till later in life. The past plays a role in who we are, but our path to the future is determined by looking forward, not back. I prefer to be defined by who I am now rather than who I was then. By the way, our last reunion was just as good as any other I've been to, and if it was the same next time it would be just fine with me. The event is what we make of it. Date Posted: 01:44:28 11/26/02 Tue Well.... I can see that participation is back to the pre Mike and Bill lashing snails pace as before… Oh well… it did its work for provoking the masses At Thanksgiving… As we all look back on what we are all thankful for during this time, Thanksgiving, I must say I'm thankful for great may things… First and foremost is a thankfullness for a life full of ‘no regrets', fore I wouldn’t be here today if not for the actions of my past. T One person can make a difference… Let me repeat... “One Person Can Make A Difference… “ . Personal accountability and responsibility CAN make a difference. Wither it a soldier guarding a post, a person just doing a job, or a volunteer just helping out. Just a few weeks ago I was involved in an impromptu “Rodeo” as I was driving down the road… a horse had broken loose from a horse drive and had gotten onto the main road while I was ‘up north’. I pulled over with about four others who traipsed through the woods for over an hour trying to catch that horse. Sure I could have driven on and not stopped, but it just wouldn’t have been right not to have stopped and helped. In grazing over the pasture of the class of 84’s deposition of our lives I’ve surmised the following cumulative resume, it is very honorable. (Heck if I were the HR personnel I’d hire ya….) Here a (my) surmised glimpse of our class’s supposititious, • Realizing the realm of incredulity; and that I can rise up and can perform wonders • I can hold a single brick yet meanwhile build a future home with my bare hands. • Able to account for every nickel and dime yet take time to expend on my family; • Been involved in may a thing, yet none greater than raising a child; • Assisting a hurting child and realizing a child is stronger than any adult; • Working hard in a retail world and still realizing kids are first and foremost; • Being up lifting to children and also a guide to co-workers. • Working in a communication world yet realizing my life and kids are just as important; • Realizing best intentions sometimes don’t quite get there; but there is more. • Being on the road, yet ever mindful of family and that responsibility. • Realizing the beauty in An object and honing it’s true potential; • See a house and a castle too • Being up lifting to children and also a guide to co-workers as well. • I can account for money, yet beautify the home as well • Raising animals and enlightening the wonder and work of a new born; • I love the Ozarks yet my family (and maybe my cars) comes first. • Becoming a kindergarten teacher and enriching young minds; • I did the Military thing… now it’s about me and my wife… • I have many personal interests, yet to assist a pet has been a paramount event. • Being watchful over children and attempting to guide them via seminary and guidance it important; • I’ve been self-sufficient, a provider, and love the outdoors But yet this weekend while working on my garage I also looked back and tried to pin-point a defining moment of our graduating class… I did come up with one very singular event and it wasn’t one that we’d of been proud of… We were ALL there and if you think back on a time when we were all together before graduation you may also think of a time when we didn’t glimmer very bright…. There may have been other times we were better off, yet maybe you can recall the event I am speaking of. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Subject: be thankful for Vet's | |
Author: Wm Magdziarz-Rainey [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 22:40:04 11/10/02 Sun Mike, On Veteran’s Day I want to thank you for your military service time you spent in the United States Air Force. I’d be interested to find out if anyone else from our graduating class ‘actively served’ in the military. I have remained a ‘civilian’ my whole live although always 'civilly active'. However, during high school, for nearly two years I was courted by Air Force recruiters. I met and filed ‘papers of intent’, however my parents forbid me to get on the Air Force recruitment bus to Kansas City. Both my parents were adamant in refusing to let me join the armed forces. In a past political diatribe e-mail I had noted that I recalled the events of my 18th birthday… On October 23 1983; I stayed home from high school so to register for the draft that day. On that morning my alarm/radio woke me to the alarming news of the Marine barracks being bombed in Beirut. My worst fear (at the time) was that we would be going to war within days, and I would be drafted… That did not happen. But I registered none-the-less that very day. In Springfield we also had been having a bit of a wild time with thunderstorms and a tornado had wielded its way through southern Springfield. I recall volunteering for the Civil Defense and going in to assist in the cleanup of that tornado in Springfield. The storms had been terribly late for the year, being in September and October. On October 23rd, I stopped by the memorial cemetery just north of Battlefield Mall that day and took some photos on my way to register at the post office in the Brentwood shopping center near the mall. I took pictures of the flag at half mast (due to the Marine barracks attack). The recent storms had fallen a tree and crushed a stone wall. In my photo I juxtaposed the age-old stone wall to the flag at half mast with the brilliant fall colors of the trees and stark blue sky. The irony? Realizing that the stone wall had been set by stone masons who surely thought it would last forever… however we found that it met with an untimely force, that of nature. So were the lives of those men in the barracks... they net with an untimely force of an evil man. So too were the lives of those in the World Trade Center... and Pentagon... and on Flight 98. We recognized, sadly after the fact, then and now, that which we assume will stand forever cannot unless we are diligent, strong, and never waning in our task for the pursuit of freedom. The stone wall was rebuilt. So has been America’s determination. Just as in Japan’s Admiral Isoroku’s statement of "I fear we have awoken a sleeping giant..." after their attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. We’ve been struck yet again and been slapped into a realists view of what is going on in the world around us. Face it folks... PEOPLE HATE AMERICA. We must not back down. We MUST not show weakness or we will be forever tormented by these cowardly terrorists. Even then, we are still vulnerable. Just like the stone wall in the cemetery, and like the World Trade Center... even after they both crumbled, one was rebuilt after a few months... New York will heal and will also be rebuilt in a fitting fashion. The ‘American Spirit’ was not crushed then and the ‘will for freedom’ has not been extinguished. We shall overcome. Just as our military presence in the Middle East still exists today… We have stayed the course. Remaining even in the ruins of Beruit and even now in the devastation of the World Trade Center… Life is not Hollywood… As much as we always want to vanquish evil by the ‘end of the show’ we must realize that time is not on our side and that this will not be an endeavor without risk and sadly casualties. Young men (and now women), who set out initially to protect the fundamental American concept of democracy and freedom have been drawn into something much more grotesque. Some sadly have paid with their lives. As in Beirut, more likely will. God save our solders and God Bless those how have and are serving in the American Military Service! Thank you Veteran’s for your commitment of serving and protecting our “AMERICAN” right to a ‘Pursuit of Happiness’. Here’s a link to a site of Ronald Reagan’s Presidential address and directive of the actions he was willing to commit America to On October 27 1983 (a mere 4 days after the attack on the Marine barracks...). We need leaders with testicular fortitude today who are willing to make this stand and lead America without fear of retribution and/or terrorism… http://www.beirut-memorial.org/history/reagan.html Be thankful for our Vet's! -Bill [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Subject: Apology | |
Author: Bill Magdziarz-Rainey [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 22:33:44 11/01/02 Fri To all, An apology (of sorts…) First of all, let me say that I do appreciate anyone’s effort to express their opinion on Mike’s and my recent correspondence. I’m willing to accept the praise and criticism. We have had varying levels of participation so far. Mike and I have been the primary ‘online participants’ up to this point… We both have been attempting to do our best effort from a long distance. (I'm in Minnesota and Mike is in Indiana.) From the lack of response (up until the week or so) there was a certain amount of frustration in our feeling that we were going through the motions of trying to gather input for the upcoming 20 year reunion where nobody else was expressing any real desire for attending it. Mike contacted me 1.5 years ago about his setting up and management of this website for the upcoming event so we could ALL have a (FREE) forum for expressing and gathering input on what we’d like to do for the 20 year reunion. Well after 1.5 years of less than stellar participation, I’ll admit a certain amount of frustration set in and manifested itself in the last week or so in a series of e-mails where I’ll admit Mike and I escalated it into a shark-like feeding frenzy. For the level of frustration I apologize. Yet, however, the sudden and heavy response to Mike's and my recent e-mail frustration actually indicates that classmates are 'WATCHING' because they seemed to quickly reply to the terse criticism. ‘All Ya’all” (using an Oprah term) seem to be always in the shadows and don't ever become 'engaged' in any real dialog. That is until this last week when we upset a few folks. I sincerely didn’t mean to ‘Irk’ any regulars to the site, and only wanted to prod others into participation… the fallout was a bit ‘stinging’ at times, yet ironically, in a twisted sort of way, it did create the ill-conceived effect of a great deal of response. Al be it not exactly what I had in mind, it did elicit a ‘response’ nonetheless. Proving that ‘All Ya’all’ ARE watching passively. So… With that being said... let’s move on. A goal of the committee: To contact EVERY living graduate of the upcoming reunion (whatever the reunion ends up being). Issue: Some of the complaints of the past reunion was 1) Didn't know about it until after it had happened; 2) found out about it too close to the event and was unable to arrange schedule on short notice to be able to get there in time. Resolution: Start EARLY and have a goal to contact EVERYONE still living. Issue: High School cliques still too predominate in last reunion. Resolution: Try to foster an environment where “EVERYONE” has an open forum to communicate their wishes for a successful reunion. Hence the webpage and the ‘forum’ of a “Message Board” where everyone can openly express their desire for what the reunion format should be. My opinion of what we should do for ‘our’ reunion: Well, we've already done the 'prom-like dinner' & 'tour of the school' and personally don't feel either represent the everyday kind of lives we actually live now 20 years after graduation. I'd much rather it be an informal gathering... A day at the lake, maybe at a resort so our families can enjoy a day together too, or maybe just the classmates out on a flotilla of rented pontoon boats on the lake, (or a float trip down a river) then back to a resort where we could have a lakeside bonfire and catered barbecue. This is my preference, yet it in the end is just ONE opinion where we as the committee want ideas from EVERYONE as to what 'WE ALL' want to do to make this a successful and interactive event for everyone. We hope to get a few ideas worked out through suggestions from classmates and ONLY THEN getting class consensuses for what “We All” want to do. I Hope this illuminates the reason for the recent stress, frustration, and volume of communication… and desire for INPUT from YOU! I hope this also clears the air a bit. -Bill [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 21:16:31 10/29/02 Tue ALL 1984 Willard Classmates.... Does ANYONE still have copy of the 1984 Willard High School Phone / Address Directory??? I know for 'YEARS' my mom kept mine in the pile of phone books in the kitchen (the pile went all the way back to the mid 1980's), however... with their recent move it was tossed. As I recall ir was a stapled bound (4.25 x 5.5 inch) directory of students and as I also recall the last year's copy had a green 'construction paper' cover (with maybe a smiley face???) If ANYONE still has one of these it could be INVALUABLE to the reunion commitee. If you have one please let us know. Addresses or not, the phone numbers alone could yield some 'parents' who still live in the area who could STILL be contacted before the demise of the Web-site. We could forward regular 'snail mail' notification to other classmates. If you have one of these directories PLEASE REPLY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We (the committee) are making EVERY attempt to contact ' (!!!!#&*&$@#@@ 'N EVERYONE!!!!' from our graduating class (and for that matter non-graduating too... If you were at Willard and 'would have' GRADUATED IN 1984... HECK... we'll embrace you as one of "US"... as it's going... maybe YOU'D even be honored as the "greatest Participant in the 20 year reunion".) At this rate even a 'fella from Minnesota' (reserving political commentary) like 'Walter Mondale' could even win an award like this from our class. Thanks, Bill (, Mike, Jean & Reunion Committee) [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 16:33:15 09/09/02 Mon A year ago my parents were on the East Coast visitng friends and attending a National Convention for the 40/8. For those of you who don't know, the 40/8 is a group of elite members of the American Legion. My parents started their trip in Rhode Island and on Sept.11 they were heading down the coast to Virginia. My father decided to leave Rhode Island early so he would miss all the traffic in New York City. They had made it through the city and was about 30 miles the other side of it when the plane hit the first tower. I was here at work wondering if they had made it ok. I knew they were going through there on that day and I also knew my father well enough to know that he would go through the city early in the morning. That was the longest day of my life.....waiting to hear from my parents. They made it ok but you will never get my dad back on the east coast. I was raised in a very Patriotic family. My dad was in the Navy for 21 years and both of my parents have always been big in the American Legion. We always had Flags outside of our house and still do. I live with my parents to help take care of my mother whose health is not that great and my parents still volunteer at the Legion and my dad even goes to the Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon once a month to play Bingo with the Veterans. My father holds state offices in both the American Legion and the 40/8. He is teaching my kids about Patriotism and Freedom. I am very proud of my father and anyone else who can put there life on the line for me and my country. I just want to say thanks to anyone in my graduating class who has served in the Armed Forces. Without people like you where would we be...... [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 04:25:04 09/06/02 Fri On the morning of September 11 2001, I was at already at work. A co-worker exclaimed from the cube next to mine that an airplane had just hit the World Trade Center and we all tried immediately logging our PC’s to the internet news sites (like CNN, ABC…). It was obvious the rest of the country was trying frantically to do the same as none of us could connect. Eventually someone did and we were all crowding near to see what had happened. Meanwhile, in our PC training room someone else had turned on the TV. I remember watching the second plane hit the second tower. By now more people were arriving to work and we moved the TV to the cafeteria. We had approximately 50 people watching in near silence. Then everything else unfolded as we all know. This was all too reminiscent from back in February 1993. I was working for Musicland’s headquarters in Minneapolis. I had been on the phone assisting the Musicland store inside the World Trade Center when the bomb went off in the underground parking area. The store never lost phone service and you could tell at first no body knew what had happened. It was too familiar a feeling on September 11, when I was able to see it unfold on the TV. On September 11, the daycare my son goes to was closed. He was staying with a neighbor who has a son about the same age as Nathan. Once I got off from work, I stopped at a local hardware store and picked up four American flags. When I picked up Nathan I asked him to give one to the neighbor lady who had taken care of him that day. We took two other flags to our other neighbors next door and across the street. Once back home I immediately put ours up. Only this week did I replace it with a new one. While at the hardware store I also picked up a couple of multi-packs of blank VHS tapes. I began recording the constant news coverage on the 8 hour video tapes. With Nathan being only 3.5 years old I wanted to be able to show him what exactly was happening as it unfolded (if he’s ever interested when he gets older). I’m skeptical and fear that after only a few years the revisionist history writers will be teaching in our schools that the attack was far less horrific than it really was, and that somehow America will be made to be at fault for the attack. Months before September 11, my wife Sandy and I had scheduled a family trip to Vancouver Canada. Our tickets had been purchased for a flight on September 12. After much turmoil about if we should try to go or not the decision eventually was made for us when all flights were grounded and the US borders were closed for the few days after the attack. We eventually rescheduled the trip for four weeks later, but the trip, and especially the flights were fairly anxious events. I have been actively involved with several charities over the last five or so years. In the last two years I have been more involved with political issues as well. Since September 11, I have stepped up that pace even more. On January 29, 2002 President Bush, in his State of the Union Address said the following, “ My call tonight is for every American to commit at least two years – 4000 hours over the rest of your lifetime – to the service of your neighbors and your nation. ” I issue that challenge to each of you. It isn’t hard. It can be as easy as merely mowing a neighbor’s yard, getting involved with a charity (there are ton’s of them), or getting involved politically. Just next week I’m volunteering as an election judge for the city during the primary election and again in November for the General election. We, as American’s, cannot sit back and become complacent (again) and let the events of the world around us continue unabated. This truly is a time of war where good must triumph over evil. Date Posted: 12:53:04 09/05/02 Thu I didn't know anyone personally that was hurt or killed that day, but I still felt it. I had gotten the kids off to school that morning and was just doing some laundry and decided to turn on the television to watch the "Today Show" when I first heard (and saw) the news of the terrible tragedy that happened that morning. I turned it on just in time to see the second airplane hit the towers, and then we all knew that it wasn't just an accident as first reported. I noticed that within the next few hours after that just how many people decided to fly their flags and show their American pride. I was making some crafts (red, white, and blue earrings) before the attacks and had run out of red beads. There was not a store in town that had any. They were all out of red and blue and low on white beads everywhere. You couldn't find a flag to buy either. The only question I had at the time (besides why it happened) was why it took an attack on our country for everyone to all of a sudden show that they are proud to be Americans! Why couldn't the flags have been flying before September 11? It is also interesting how things changed overnight from criticism of our President to support of his decisions. These are things that should have been seen before America was attacked. Of course this is all in restrospect and it is too late to change the past. I think we just need to find a way to make things better for the future and try to learn from something from the past. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 11:55:40 09/04/02 Wed I'm going to open up the board to those that would like to voice their opinions and/or feelings regarding 9/11/01 as we approach the anniversary of this event. I've always meant this board to be more than just for the reunion, and as we'll hear from politicians, celebrities, etc. for the next week on their feelings, I wanted us to have a voice. Even if it's to each other. I was getting my truck worked on that morning and listening to the events unfold on the radio; at first, I thought it was a promo for a movie or something. I was instantly infuriated at the events unfolding. By the time I got to work, I was able to watch what had happened. Shortly thereafter, the towers collapsed. The most prominent feeling I've had regarding that day is pure rage at those responsible. I have attained a more heightened sense of pride, respect and admiration for our "heroes" (firefighters, police officers and everyday people that put others before themselves). While I know it'll be a long (political) battle to put an end to these types of terrorist actions, I only hope I'm still alive to see it through. I also have renewed pride in our military; also very proud of myself, family and friends who have served to keep this country safe. It's still painful to watch scenes from that morning and I know it'll be even more so to relive it next Wednesday...but, I'll watch because I never want to forget. This country should never forget what happened and should never forget the 3,044 innocent people that died that day. I lost two friends at the Pentagon that morning that were there because they had "won" a tour from their squadron. They will always be in my heart. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
