Subject: Columbia was the oldest NASA shuttle in use
In reply to: Sister Regina Dentata 's message, "Space Shuttle Colombia breaks up on re-entry; all hands presumed lost" on 08:27:56 02/01/03 Sat

I think I have that fact right. It was built in 1981, according to CNN.

I was 6 when Challenger was lost, I think, and I still remember that day vividly. My teachers were all so excited because there was a teacher on board, so all the students were gathered together to watch the launch on tv. When it exploded, I was one of about 60 confused, stunned first-graders who simply didn't understand what happened. We were quickly ushered back to our class rooms and as far as I can remember, not a word was said about it. I do remember the teachers crying, however.

I watched the press conference earlier today and the former NASA pilot (didn't catch his name) made a good point when he said that we take shuttle launches and landings for granted because they are so rarely plagued with tragedy. Coincidentally, this incident occured 4 days after the 17th anniversary of the Challenger disaster.

This horrific Columbia crash brings back a lot of those old feelings I had in 1986; I am almost 24 now, but I am still a confused, stunned little girl.
