There's a type of discrimination that I have found to be unprotected by law. Approximately ten per cent of the population is discriminated against, and often the discriminators don't even realise they are doing it. People get frustrated when I have to swop sides for my swipe-card when I enter the university, as the box is on the right, and as a natural left-hander, I automatically go to use it with the other hand. Scissors are difficult to come by which are designed for the left hander (I own two pairs, one I had to get from LA via a cousin who lives there, and the others I bought at a specialised scissors and knives store in the Wangfujing street of Beijing). There is a store in London which sells products for the left hander, but I don't know the details of it.

My maternal grandfather was ambidextrous. His daughter, my aunt, is left handed. I am left handed.

My worst experience of being a left hander was when I was in school. There were two left handers in the class - we had a replacement teacher, as our teacher had gone off to have a baby. The first week, we were both seen as and and labelled as stupid, because we could not write "right". We were put in a corner and made to copy out dull spelling words from the book for a week. Then my mother found out, went in to the school to complain, and the supply teacher left the next day. My mother stood up for my rights that day, er I mean lefts. Er, um, yeah.

Ther are also a lot of negative cultural neuances associated with left-handed-ism - take the word "SINISTER", which apparently comes from the Latin for "left". Let's have a look at the Bible too. Sheep to the right hand of god, goats to the left. We all know who the left-handed goats are, don't we? In China, I was viewed as quite an oddity because I am naturally apposed to using the left hand -- there they force children to learn to use their right hands. I heard somewhere that left-handers are more intelligent. Reagan, Bush Senior and Clinton are left handed so there may be exceptions to this rule. And lefties are more creative. Leonardo da Vinci was left handed. But a test for witches was to see which hand they preferred.

Interesting FAQ for lefties.

Famous lefties.
