Steve: You confuse the issue of US Sovereignty with criminal behavior:

it is worth remembering that the southwest USA *was* part of Mexico for a pretty long time.

It doesn't logically follow that because the American Southwest was part of Mexcio at one time that its citizens should now be allowed to break US law en masse.
The fact is that Mexico was more than happy to take $20,000,000 from the US in the 1849 Treaty of Hildago (or the Treaty of Guadalupe) to sell CA to ths US. In an event, Mexico itself was both a victim and a tool of Spanish conquest from 1500 -- 1870, and the larger, cruel geopolitics of that always get ignored in the debate.

The latest move to legalize illegals is a move of political violence against Americans for many reasons:

1. It's primary aim is corporate, for it seeks to reduce the avergae wage Americans make. If an illegal is legalized, he or she will work for the minimum wage and not the $9.00 someone in Los Angeles can make at Home Depot or Target (and here I am speaking of largely uneducated workers, not the minority who are college educated). This profit goes to the corporate bottom line, a portion of which will be donated where? Why, to the GOP!

2. It seeks to break the power of the unions and hence the Democratic party, by diluting the work force with cheap labor. In this sense, the GOP is aiming a bullet straight at California. The GOP reasons that if illegals become beholden to it, they will register GOP once they become naturalized and the Democratic lock on CA can be broken. The timing of this act will coincide with a massive GOP registration move amongst those Latinos who can vote. The evil, racial calculus of this move belongs to the GOP who is using Democratic Latino activists. CA's Lorena Sanchez is the Democrat who unseated B1 Bob Dornan. Imagine if she were to pull a Jeffords and go GOP! She could take all or Orange County and its Hispanic voters with her. Perhaps Bush is convincing her to swicth parties and promising to back her in a run against Gray Davis in 2002 in exchange for his hammering through this program? In any case, the racism is on the part of the GOP.

3. To call Augie a racist or attack him plays into the hands of the worst Hispanic racists. They always do this, NKLS Cody, they always cast anyone who says anything negative about Hispanics a racist. The activists never address the inherent criminality of the illegal. Why should we legalize millions of illegals? This sends a message to millions of economic refugees that entering the US is acceptable as long as you can hide out long enough to be legalized. And what of the Constitutionality? Are we only going to allow in Mexicans and not Cambodians?

This bit of diplomacy shows how Bush is willing to subvert
foreign affairs and everything else to American corporate interests. Bush's end game is still the destruction of CA as a Democratic power base. However, the GOP mainstream in CA will not like this move. It will backfire on Bush come 2002, and frankly it could die in a deeply divided Senate, which I hope it does.

BTW, NKLS Cody: It's not enough to pain Augie as a racist. You never addressed the substance of his arguments. I don't think he is a racist. Instead, I understand the outrage he feels that the US is being attacked daily by people who do not play by the law and have no intention of playing by the law -- and not just in immigration affaiors, but in matters of paying their bills altogether or even keeping car insurance. You don't understand how these people are economic refugees who will break any law. Where a driver is seen in the hit and runs in L.A. County for example, the drivers are almost always identified as Hispanic. Illegals would rather leave the people they hit in the unregistered and uninsured cars dying on the street than help them. They do not want to go to jail and they do not want to be deported. Illegals have been caught after fled the scene in which they left a child they hit dying in the street.
Illegals are ruthless and have proven they will destroy America given the chance as they did during the Rodney King riots when 90& of the looters arrested were Hispanics
who were here illegally. Never forget that statistic because it will tell you everything you need to know about the heart and soul of an illegal alien. The sympathetic picture the activists would paint is a lie and a fiction because decent people do not break the law. You can't have it both ways: If illegals were decent people, then they would not be here. They would seek legal entry like all of the decent people from other countries do. But they don't. Instead, they break the law and then expect us to pay all of their medical and educational bills when they arrive. Thses lawbreaking freeloaders are not noble in any sense of the word. They are criminals and to believe anything else is to either have family that is illegal or to want cheap labor for your business.
