Date Posted: 18:22:31 06/17/02 Mon Alli smiled happily and walked out to the field. She could believe that her mom was going to let her ride Wind Chaser! The spirited Anglo Arab was tricky to catch and Alli hid the lead rope behind her back. Chase trotted toward her when she opened the gate, not realizing that she was going to catch him. Alli quickly clipped the lead shank to his halter and led him into the barn. Susan stood inside, examining Chase as he walked easily into the barn. The handsome chestnut gelding had a light bouncy stride and he was a superb jumper. Alli brushed his glossy coat. She picked his hooves and lifted the saddle onto his back. He snorted and nipped playfully at her as she tightened the girth. She strapped on her helmet and picked up Chase’s bridle. The gelding took the bit easily. Alli led him out of the barn and clambered onto his back. He walked forward at her simple cues and listened perfectly. Susan stood by the rail, watching Alli warm up the stunning horse. He was ready for his upcoming show, but this workout would keep him on his toes. The jumps they would be doing were 3 feet, that was nothing for either horse or rider, if they kept their concentration. Susan walked out to the center of the ring and said, “Alli you’ve warmed up so let’s head out to the jumping arena.” They walked over and Susan pointed out the course. “These jumps are easy for Chase. I want you to take it easy, we are not racing against the clock. You can take these at a steady canter, not a hand gallop. Clear?” Susan stated. Alli nodded and squeezed. Chase bounced into a rocking canter, his stride smooth and steady. They bounced over the first jump, an oxer. They went easily through the course, their mind on business. Alli turned and took the final combination again, just for fun. Then she stopped beside Susan. “Excellent. The show is in 2 days, so that will be Chase’s last work until then. Untack and cool out Chase. Then, you get Delilah and I will get Beauty. They need to be jumped today, as well.” Susan remarked. Alli rushed into the barn and quickly untacked and cooled out Chase. Then she out him in the field and walked to the paddock for mares. She clipped a lead shank to Delilah’s halter and led her into the barn. She brushed the Morgan’s palomino coat gently and slipped the saddle onto her back. She tightened the girth and looked over at her mom. Susan already had Beauty, her QH mare, tacked up and was leading her out of the barn. Alli finshed tacking up Delilah and led her out of the barn quickly. Alli mounted and warmed up the friendly Morgan. Susan was warming Beauty up at each canter lead. After warming up, they headed up to the jumping arena. “We’ll take the same course on these mares that you did with Chase. I’ll go first.” Susan said. She squeezed and Beauty sprang into a smooth, comfortable canter. The pair went easily over the 3’ course, Beauty’s smooth stride pushing them over the jumps. Alli smiled at her mom before nudging Delilah with her heel. The mare smoothly strode forward, her canter prancy and light. They sprang over every jump in the course, they were an excellent pair. Alli pulled Delilah up. Susan dismounted and led Beauty to the barn. Alli followed suit. Then they untacked their mares.
