Jon walked down the road the family mutt, Mocha, bouncing along beside him. He grinned as GRF came into view. The stable was co owned with Helen by his mom, and was right next door to their home. Helen was struggling to get her TB stallion, Fire, to go into his paddock. She got the stubborn but sweet stallion in and turned to Jon. "Hey, Jon! Susan said that she can't help you with your barrel racing today, but that you could get Mia or Jake to help you. They're in the barn." Helen said. Jon walked into the barn and immediately saw Mia, who worked at GRF. The 19 y/o smiled at him and got back to cleaning Beauty's saddle. Her amber colored hair reached her shoulders and was layered neatly. She looked every bit of the cowgirl she was. Raised on a ranch in Montana, Mia could do anything western, and was a champion barrel racer. "Hey Jon. You running barrels with Montana?" she asked. "Mmmm-hmmm. Gonna see if Jake wants to help." Jon said. "He's busy right now, besides he rides english only. Want my help?" Mia said. Jon nodded and Mia added, "I'll be riding Beauty with you and Montana." They walked out to the paddocks. Jon opened the gate to Montana's field and whistled. The colt galloped over, pulling to a sharp stop next to Jon. Jon clipped the lead shank to the colt and led him into the barn. After grooming and tacking up, Jon led Montana out to the ring. Mia had already warmed up Beauty and they were loping easily up the ring. Jon warmed Montana up as quickly as possible. Then Mia lined up to run the barrels. Beauty flew forward and twisted around the barrels tightly, Mia guiding her expertly. They pulled up and Mia signaled that he could go whenever he was ready. Jon sighed and wished he and Montana were that good. Then he kicked and Montana exploded out, his pace tearing up the turf, as he whipped around the first two barrels. Then as they headed for the third, Montana dropped off the bit and stopped listening to Jon's signals. The colt half heartedly finished the pattern and galloped back to Mia and Beauty. "Did you feel where he stopped listening and connecting with you and do you know how to fix that problem?" Mia asked. Jon nodded and spurred Montana into a gallop. The colt galloped strongly through the pattern, under Jon's firm commands. Jon patted Montana as he slowed the colt down and said, "Thanks for riding with me, Mia." Mia smiled. "Let's cool these guys out by taking them on a nice trail ride along the trail behind the barn." she said smiling. She and Jon squeezed gently and walked down the trail, chatting about upcoming competitions. They reached the end of the trail and walked over to the barn. They dismounted and led their mounts into the barn, where Jill was tacking up her Arabian stallion, Storm Cloud. "Hi guys!" the woman said kindly. They waved and quickly untacked their horses. They turned the mare and gelding out together and Jon walked into the barn to clean his tack while Mia went to muck out stalls. Jon finished up and walked over to his house. He picked up the phone and called Suzie, Helen's daughter. "Hello?" Suzie said as she picked up the phone. "Hi! This is Jon. I am going to ask Cassidy to go on a trail ride with me this afternoon and since I worked Montana this morning I was wondering if I could ride King. I want to surprise Cassidy by riding saddleseat!" Jon said. "Sure, if you're careful. I've gotta go. Jess is calling. Bye!" Suzie said, hanging up. Jon clicked a button and this time called Cassidy's number. "Hello." Cassidy answered. "Wanna go on a trail ride with me this afternoon?" Jon asked.
