Date Posted: 18:30:42 06/17/02 Mon Cassidy put Pride up and then went to get Southern Gent. The big Walker was grazing under a patch of trees. "C'mere Gent!" Cassidy called and the black horse ambled over, swishing his tail. He looked laid back now, Cassidy thought, but once he was under saddle he acted like the flashy stallion she knew he was. Gent followed her up to the barn and she groomed his silky midnight coat. Then she tacked him up and mounted. Gent held his head high, arched his neck, and stepped off briskly. Cassidy pushed her heels down, collected the reins and held them high, sat high and deep, and pressed her heels against the Tennesee Walker's sides. Gent picked up a bold, flashy rack around the arena, moving smoothly and quickly. They circled the arena in both directions several times at the rack. Southern Gent was 5-gaited. Cassidy closed her hands on the reins and squeezed, bringing her outside leg back subtly. Gent launched into a rocking chair canter, skimming over the ground. It was a wonderful sensation! Cassidy rocked with the stallion's huge, sweeping strides. After schooling under saddle for awhile (doing the running walk, flat footed walk, & rocking chair canter), Cassidy tugged on the reins and they left the arena. She decided to take a diffrent trail with Gent. It was much later now and the burning sun caused both horse & rider to sweat. Cassidy dropped her feet out of the stirrups as they walked beneath a shady canopy of trees. Even with her feet stretched out of the stirrups, they barely came to Gent's belly. The tall, gentle horse was moving along up the trail, nostrils flared in anticipation. He gave a sudden buck and burst into a rapid canter. "Whoa!" Cassidy slipped onto his neck. Quickly recovering her seat, she shortened the reins and slowed her horse. Then she saw why he had broke into a canter. Up ahead there was a bend in the trail. On one side was a fence. On the otherside of the fence were - mares. The downside to owning a stallion, even one as well-behaved and gentle as hers. Cassidy tightened the reins and pressed Gent past the herd. Once out of sight, the stallion calmed down and continued up the trail with ground covering strides. They cantered over several logs, none higher than 2'-6". Cassidy came to the end of the trail. Up ahead was a grassy pasture with a x country course, all about 3'. Cassidy was about to turn Gent back when an idea occured to her. She purged him forwards & they picked up a trot towards a single 2'-9" log by itself. Cassidy knew the big stallion could jump that, and she suddenly wanted to. Cass dug her heels into Gent's sides and pointed him at the log. With powerful, smooth strides the stallion covered ground quickly and approached the log. It was the highest Gent had jumped - he was a gaited horse after all. Cassidy eagerly rose in the saddle as Gent tucked his legs beneath him and surged easily over the log. "Good boy!" she praised him happily. Gent trotted proudly back to the barn. :-) [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
