I'm reviewing my old fanfics (maybe they were good for a twelve year old, but oh my gosh, I said some dumb things) and have a few questions, I'm trying to edit them and make them decent, LOL.

Wow, it's been forever.

Anyway, welcome to the highly anticipated Pirates of the Caribbean 2 edition!!!
This past weekend, I went to see the latest installment in the Pirates franchise, Dead Man’s Chest. Unfortunately, the theater I saw it in was…well let’s be frank, it was a hole alright; the audio was terrible. I have pretty good hearing and I had trouble picking out some of the heavily accented dialogue. I have a feeling I lost some of the best lines due to the fact I was still trying to decipher what was said in the previous banter. Ah, the joys of living in the boondocks huh? I hope that it doesn’t skew my view of the movie too greatly…At least I didn’t have another Harry Potter episode with a guy and his mohawk sitting in front of me. ~grumble grumble~
Here’s the quickie synopsis:
In this sequel to the hit blockbuster Curse of the Black Pearl, we find Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and a whole slew of familiar faces return to take on a frightening Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) and his monstrous crew straight out of Jacque Cousteau’s aquatic life. (A ship manned by a crew of cursed pirates…does this sound familiar at all?)
Captain Sparrow must either repay his life-debt to the legendary cutthroat or be forced to labor for all eternity as a dolphin or something aboard Jones’s ship. Hot on his heels are Will (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightly) whose lives depend on retrieving the compass of Sparrow in exchange for freedom from the death sentence for helping Sparrow escape at the end of Movie #1. Whew! That was quite a mouthful.
And now what you’ve all been patiently waiting for! My take:
I thought Pirates 2 was entertaining enough, yet not quite up to par with the first installment. In some ways, it seemed a lot like the same plot (see: above summary); Cursed, immortal pirates on a cursed ship need to be stopped before they kill the main characters and anyone else in their path. Wasn’t that pretty much Barbossa and his crew of undead pirates in Movie 1? Only this time instead of a trunk full of gold pieces we are looking for a chest with a still-beating human heart in it. Which leads me to my next gripe with the movie…
It seems like the studio fell into the greed trap while making this movie. Their goal is to squeeze every last cent out of the franchise as they can, so why not make it a trilogy instead of a single movie? Trilogies always seem to do well, right? (But based on the box office numbers I’m sure they are laughing all the way to the bank) There are times during the movie where I feel that I felt the writers were stretching the plotline a little too much, and some of it was patchy and quickly done with just the right amount of special effects to make it a blockbuster. Without giving too much away, when you start bringing back characters who supposedly die in the previous movie, it makes it feel almost soap opera-ish when they show up in the new movie with no explanation whatsoever. It’s hard to explain, but there just didn’t seem to be as much plot substance in this movie compared to the first.
Dead Man’s Chest made it painfully obvious that there was originally only one movie intended. The first movie had such a tightly woven plotline and well thought out story that it makes this sequel pale in comparison. To me it almost has the feel of a transitional movie; we have a little plotline thrown in for good measure, but mostly it’s the perfect engine for loosening all the perfectly tied down plotlines from the first movie, and setting the scene for the last.
The movie wasn’t bad by any means. I think Johnny Depp has truly found the role he was meant to play. He is perfect as the smarmy, but occasionally heroic, Captain Jack Sparrow and I can’t picture anyone else in the role. Unless he is in the third, I won’t bother to see it. It’s also an action movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously. There is just the right amount of humor interjected to give everyone in the audience what they want. It was truly an escape from the ordinary which is what a movie should be anyway right? In that respect I think the movie was a great success.
Don’t get me wrong, the movie wasn’t bad at all. I really did get a kick out of it. I just think it wasn’t as good as it could have been given the same time and consideration as its predecessor. Hopefully, the pirates still have enough in them to punch up the final episode and bring the series home in true pirate fashion. Overall, I give the movie 7.5/10 iced teas with funky little umbrellas in them.

Anyway, I agree. It was fun, but not as fun as the first movie and I wasn't thrilled w/ the ending. ALso Kiera ... whatever her name ... looked... different. I don' tknow... I have taken a few minutes to post some interesting sites I've found recently and some that I've bookmarked over the past few months.
All of the diversions are quite entertaining. The Hapland ones especially--you might need a partner to collaborate with! It's pretty much a sequence of events puzzle to find a way to the desired result. You can google the title for steps and cheat (which I did after a while), but the first one especially is possible.

(You always find the most interesting things when googling Luoodles...and of course I think they really are all our beloved Lu... but anyway - I knew that she would have posted here and that it would be distinctive enough to find her, but did I? Well hello again. Long time no see. I just got back from my Spring Break and felt the need to resurrect the Movie Review Hut so I could share my thoughts on the movie Failure to Launch (Oh boy this is gonna be fun!) This past Saturday I went with an old high school friend to the cruddy little theater near my hometown to see a movie I was really eager to see: the romantic comedy Failure to Launch starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Quickie synopsis:
Desperate parents (Terry Bradshaw and Kathy Bates) hire Paula (Parker) to drive their 30-something slacker son, Tripp (McConaughey), out of the house by pretending to date him. Matters become complicated when Paula ends up truly falling for him and Tripp discovers the truth behind the best relationship he’s ever had.
My review (buckle your seatbelts and return your chairs to the upright postion):
I never in a million years thought I would say this about a romantic comedy but I was supremely disappointed in FTL. Most of you know me as the romantic comedy guru, but this one just didn’t hold my interest or attention much at all. It was a downright snoozefest in some parts. What was wrong with it? ~taps fingers to chin~ Where do I begin?
For two very attractive people (MM looked yummy) the chemistry between SJP and MM was just not there. Towards the end, I wasn’t even sure that Tripp had any feelings whatsoever for Paula the chemistry was that off! The characters just don’t endear themselves to the audience. I wasn’t emotionally invested in Tripp and Paula so I really wasn’t rooting for them like so many other romantic movie couples in history. It was supposed to be a funny story, but I must have missed most of the funny. Definitely not a laugh-until-you-almost-pee-your-pants kind of movie. Yes, there was a chuckle here and there, but very little good comedy.
The plotline, while good on paper, just doesn’t work in action. It was contrived (but aren’t most romantic comedies?) and rather idiotic at times. The whole ending (while happy) just didn’t sit right with me. It just felt like the writers tried too hard…
And may I just send take a moment to ask the director something…thank you. Why, why, whyyyyy did we feel the need to show images of Terry Bradshaw’s naked hindquarters THREE TIMES during the movie? That is three times more TB’s rear end than I wanted to ever see. It had no place in the plotline really, just seemed like gratuitous nudity for nudity’s sake. (Why couldn’t you at least show MM’s rear end? Oops, I didn’t say that…that was evil Sara!)
So did this movie have any pluses? Yeah, there were a few redeeming qualities. The B-line characters and plotlines really were the best part of the movie. Zooey Deschanel really steals the show as Paula’s neurotic and somewhat scary roommate, Kit. And I also got a kick out of Tripp’s friends Ace and Demo and the many misadventures that they embark on. Oh, yeah, another big plus is just getting to look at MM for an hour and 40 minutes (Sometimes sans shirt…~sigh~…Sorry evil Sara rears her ugly head again)
Other than that, nada, zip, zero, zilch appeal. I’m sorry that my friend had to waste the $10 to get us into the movie (I didn’t have to pay ha ha!) Should have rented this one later instead…definitely not worth seeing in the theater. See Failure to Launch at your own risk! I give it 4.5/10 ice teas (I’ve decided to go to a 10 ice tea system LOL!)

Hello everyone! Here's a rundown of the last year of my life:
-Year two of grad school at Oakland University; still working on my Master's in Linguistics... only 3 weeks left of class!!
-Graduate assistant for 2005-2006 schoolyear, which paid my tuition
-Taught ESL to native speakers of Spanish; and now I have my Teaching ESL Certificate
-Two roommates (who were like a brother and sister to me) both moved out at the end of March :*( They're now in California and Arizona.
-Currently teaching ESL (conversation and slang) at Oakland to our new Saudi Arabian students
-Will write my thesis this summer (though I still haven't decided on a topic...)
-Started learning American Sign Language again, partly thanks to watching Sue Thomas, F.B.Eye and rediscovering how fascinated I am by it
-Possible roadtrip to D.C., Norfolk and Myrtle Beach this summer (and also Montreal, if I can afford it)
-Moving to France in September to teach ESL, probably near Nice (teaching contract is October 1 - March 31)
-Most likely moving to Perth, Australia, to start my PhD in Linguistics at Western Australia in May or June 2007
Anyway, just wanted to say hi and let everyone know I'm still around!

For once *I* have a movie review! Wonderfully done movie, I thoroughly recommend hunting down whichever local theater has this movie in your area. Obviously you do have to be somewhat interested in the plot - its about the 5 missionary families who wanted to reach this tribe somewhere in the Amazon... (Jim Elliot being the missionary with the most name recognition of the bunch - the 5 men were killed by the tribe the first time they tried to reach them - ok so that gives away SOME of the plot, but since most of us who are interested in this kind of movie have already heard about the real story)- anyway - it was just extremely well done.

BODY PIERCING.
I'm sorry folks but I just MUST spew over this! LOL! I am so tired of going to some store or something, walk up to the clerk and I'M NOT KIDDING... nearly GAG when I see these... THINGS sticking out of their noses, eyebrows, lips, tongues, etc. etc. etc. Is it that they have some sort of neuralogical problem???? Were they TRYING to put on a pair of earings and "WHOOPS! Oh MAN! MISSED AGAIN! Dang that hurts! Ow! Ow! Ow!" Honest to goodness I went into Dominos the other day to order pizza and I really TRULY nearly GAGGED at the clerk. Can you IMAGINE some woman walks in, takes a look at you and.. GAGS??? SOmeone explain to me why WHY anyone would do this. It DOES NOT LOOK GOOD. I mean... The pearl thing in the nose... forgive me but.. It looks like a BOOGER. Well.. it DOES. WHAT are they THINKING? This girl had some sort of spike thing sticking out of her upper lip and YES.. it looked like well... the above. It GROSSED ME OUT. I couldn't LOOK at her. I wanted to ask for someone else to WAIT on me. I'm not making this up or exagerating. And she was very nice, and polite.. and.. I couldn't even make EYE contact w/ her because if I looked her in the eye, I'd see her lip. ANd if I saw her lip w/ that THING that looked like it was sliding into her MOUTh... EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!

- Can't say I've ever thought about body piercing in quite the way you describe it, Lu. I will, now however, have a completely different outlook on it. I have, on occassion, wondered if these people made a conscious decision to do this or were they delusional (as in, wasted) at the time. I have also wonder how daily functions(eating w/ tongue thingy) are accomplished. But, since I can't seem to get past how much pain is involved in getting things other than an ear pierced, I personally, shall never find out. Well I can't say I've given quite that much thought myself, but no I would never ever think about getting a hole put in my nose or eyebrow or tongue intentionally. The most daring thing I had done was my cartilage pierced. That was just an impulse to do something that no one thought I'd ever do, but that's as far as it'd go. I may think someone has bad fashion sense, especially since only about 1 in 50 piercings actually suits the person who has it, but *shrug*. To each their own. - I saw a couple of good movies recently. "Brokeback Mountain" was amazing in the way this touchy subject was handled, so much so that, to me, it was more about an intense love that came at the wrong time, but wouldn't leave the couple alone, than it was about "gay love". I also saw "Walk the Line" which was much better than I expected. I still need to see King Kong, but haven't had 3½+ hours to devote to the expedition just yet. I wish it were Friday. This semester is going to be a killer. One class I actually have a book report in (guess I better get to reading...) and in another I have a 1pg. min/2 pg. max paper to write for EACH CLASS!
