Subject: Can someone explain?

If a dog can achieve many titles in competitions that are supposed to be proving working ability and temperament but not be suitable for the real life situations that they seek to emulate, what's the point? (apart from fun). Are they competition for competition's sake and not testing? Are there any titles can be counted on as proof of ability in real life?
