If in the old world (and I don't believe the boerboel is an old breed), people judged dogs on their ability to work, which they did as dogs had to carry their weight and do their part to survive, they would NOT have cared what color the dogs were. If the dog was green that would have been fine if it worked.

So, the "all things considered, the simpliest reason is probably the true one."

The breed certainly has had outcrosses in it. No need to hide this. I would change my mind if I saw several blue boerboels from 15-25 years ago.
