Subject: Test result - the tasks

Questionnaire

For Scenario #1:
You have just tried out a few tasks and features on the new MP3 player prototype being developed by our design team. Could you answer a few questions for us?

Task 1: Turn on the machine.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Trivial

1. Did you locate the power button immediately? Yes
Notes:
I found the red button is power button. The color stands out.

2. Did you think that the marking on the power button is easy to read?
Yes
Notes:
It depends on how the player is being hold… It’s easy to read closely facing the front side, but if it’s held not so closely, may not read the word… but can easily find the button by its red color.

3. Do you notice the screen flash on when you turned the player on?
Yes
Notes:
I don’t remember if it flashed on… (Then turned it off and turned it on again, this time found the screen did flash on.)

4. Did you notice the LCD screen? Yes
Notes: If yes, Can you describe what was displayed immediately after you turned it on?
I see some titles, they are bold, caught my eyes right away.

Task 2: You decide that you want to listen to 107FM. Please do so.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Easy
1. Did you locate the mode button immediately? No
Notes:
(Pushed “FM” button directly for radio without using the mode button. Used the scrolls for tuning. Then found the “+, -“ buttons near “FM/AM” could also tune.

2. Is the mode button clearly marked? No
Notes:
The contrast is not good. Brighter color may be clearer. The print is too small.

3. Did you find it difficult to switch to FM mode? No
Notes:
The “FM” button is big and clear to me.

4. Did you locate the tuner immediately?
Notes: (if not where did you look for it first - notes)
Yes, and I found there are several alternatives.

5. How did you figure out that the station has been tuned to?
Notes:
The number in the screen is changing.

Task 3: Imagine that some time has passed and now you decide that you want to listen to an MP3 song. Please go ahead and listen to the song titled Ode to My Family.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Between easy and hard

1. Did you have to switch to MP3 mode? Yes

2. Did you know the track number of song Ode to My Family? Yes

3. Did you locate the scroll buttons fairly easily? Yes
(Tried to use the radio tuning buttons for scrolling, failed, then found the right scrolls)

4. Did you notice that the songs were highlighted? Yes
Notes: It’s easy to see.

5. Were you able to select the song fairly easily? Yes
Notes:
Now I need to see the song titles … Oh, I see, I can use this button, it says “MP3/Radio”. Maybe if there is a button saying “MP3” beside “FM” “AM”, it would be easier. (The user used both the scroll and >> buttons, they hit play button to play. ) But if there are 100 songs, how could I find one?

Task 4: Now assume that this song has finished playing. You want to now listen to the first MP3 song. Please go ahead.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Between easy and hard

1. Which buttons did you use? Forward/Back buttons

2. How did you figure that you have reached the first song? Looked at LCD
Notes:
(The user tends to push the stop button before switching to other songs. It is not necessary.)

3. Which button did you use to play the song? Play button
Notes:
These two buttons (note: means the play and select buttons) have the same symbols. I think I could use either of them.

Task 5:
The volume is a little loud, please go ahead and turn it down.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Hard

1. Were you able to locate the volume button easily?
The two buttons here (note: refer to the tuning buttons) look like volumes. But they don’t work. There is no word saying “volume” on all buttons…

2. Did you notice the LCD?
Yes

Task 6:
You have to run. Please proceed to tell me how you would bring the device with you so that you could still listen to it.
Notes:
I would wear a carrier on my waist. I don’t want to hold it in hand.

Taks 7: Turn the player OFF.
Did you figure out that the Power button can be used to turn off as well ?
Yes
Notes:
Very easy. It’s the same as any other electronic devices.

For Scenario #2
Background for Tasks 1-9:
Imagine that you are continuing to play with the device at a later time.

Task 1:
Go ahead and turn on the machine and plug in the headphones.
Notes:
(Found the headphone jack quickly, noticed the headphone symbol.) The green color is helpful, it makes the jack easy to find.

Task 2:
You decide that you want to play Fragile. Please proceed to do so.
Notes:
(Used scrolls and select button). I must click here on and on… If there were “fast forward” and “fast backward” it would be better.

Task 3:
Now the song is not quite loud enough for you to hear it comfortably. Go ahead and turn up the volume. Can you tell, aside from hearing the device, how loud the volume is? How?
Notes:
(Turned up the volume easily and found the max is 25. Learned the volume number from the screen).

Task 4:
You are tired of listening to this song and want to skip to the very next track, please go ahead.
Notes:
(Used the “forward” button).

Task 5:
Now imagine that you get a phone call. You do not want to lose your place in the song. Can you do anything about that? Do you know where you are in the song?
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Easy

1. Did you notice that the play/pause buttons are the same?
Yes
(Found there was Elapse time)

Task 6:
The song has finished and you want to go to song # 8 because your friend said that when he or she recorded the songs they recorded one of your favorites as track number 8.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Easy

1. How did you locate the track number you were at?
Notes:
I see the highlighted title and know the currently selected track. Then I can go to the number I want.

2. How did you detect that you have been able to select the song?
Notes:
It is highlighted.

Task 7:
Next, let us pretend that you want to listen to the radio. Your favorite station is 1500 AM. Please go ahead and turn the radio on and move to that station.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Hard

Notes:
(Pushed “AM” then use the scroll button) But I need to click too many times to go up to 1500 AM!

Task 8:
Can you tell how much battery life the device still has in it?
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Hard
Notes:
There is a power indicator in the screen, but I’m not sure if the dark color indicates full or empty…

Task 9:
You have to run. Please go ahead and turn off the machine. Assume that the battery is low. Describe how you would recharge it while you are away. This will complete this scenario. Thank you.
Notes:
Battery… Mmm, it is not in the front side. (Looked at backview) Oh, here’s the battery case. I can change batteries here. (Tester hint: how about recharge?) Let me check the bottom… here’s a DC jack. Is that for recharge? I think I need an adaptor…

1. Could you please comment about the appearance of this new MP3 player?
Good, and it looks modern and expensive.

2. What did you like about this MP3 player?
It’s small, portable, and versatile.

3. What did you dislike?
It would be painful if I want to find a song from many songs.

4. Do you think you would want more features with this player? If yes, which ones?
Yes. Maybe a way to find a song by artist or album. And it would be nice if it can go to my favorite radio stations directly.

5. Do you think that this new player is easy to carry?
Yes.

6. Do you think that this new player is simple to operate?
Mostly.

7. Rate this player compared to any other portable music players that you own on a scale of 1 to 4? 1 being very good and 4 being very bad
