For Scenario #1:
You have just tried out a few tasks and features on the new MP3 player prototype being developed by our design team. Could you answer a few questions for us?

Task 1: Turn on the machine.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Easy - 5 sec, no errors

1. Did you locate the power button immediately? Yes


2. Did you think that the marking on the power button is easy to read?
Yes

3. Do you notice the LCD flash on when you turned the player on?
No
Notes:

Was not sure what an LCD was.


4. Did you notice the LCD screen? No
Notes: If yes, Can you describe what was displayed immediately after you turned it on?

Same problem as above.

Task 2: You decide that you want to listen to 107FM. Please do so.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Easy 8 sec, no errors

1. Did you locate the mode button immediately? No
Notes:

She did – but was not sure what a “mode” button was.


2. Is the mode button clearly marked? Yes – after explanation

3. Did you find it difficult to switch to FM mode? No
Notes:

It started on FM mode.


4. Did you locate the tuner immediately?
Notes: (if not where did you look for it first - notes)

Yes, through what a “tuner” was had to be explained first.


5. How did you figure out that the station has been tuned to?
Notes:

Clicked on the arrows up and down in numbers.

Task 3: Imagine that some time has passed and now you decide that you want to listen to an MP3 song. Please go ahead and listen to the song titled Good Times.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Easy – 10 sec. no errors

1. Did you have to switch to MP3 mode? Yes

2. Did you know the track number of song Good Times? Yes

3. Did you locate the scroll buttons fairly easily? Yes

4. Did you notice that the songs were highlighted? Yes

Noted that only the one that was clicked on was highlighted.

5. Were you able to select the song fairly easily? Yes

Task 4: Now assume that this song has finished playing. You want to now listen to the first MP3 song. Please go ahead.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Easy – 5 sec – no errors.

1. Which buttons did you use? Scroll buttons

2. How did you figure that you have reached the first song? Looked at LCD Notes:

Noted that it was listed with the number 1.

3. Which button did you use to play the song? Play button

Task 5:
The volume is a little loud, please go ahead and turn it down.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Hard – 20 sec, required help, no errors

1. Were you able to locate the volume button easily? No

Said that she did not understand/identify the marking with the volume

2. Did you notice the LCD? Yes

Task 6:
You have to run. Please proceed to tell me how you would bring the device with you so that you could still listen to it.
Notes:

Said that she would just pick it up and carry it. Would like a carrier but did not see one. Did not see the clip on the back.


Taks 7: Turn the player OFF.
Did you figure out that the Power button can be used to turn off as well ?
Yes
Notes:

She said that since it said power, she assumed that it would shut it off.











For Scenario #2
Background for Tasks 1-9:
Imagine that you are continuing to play with the device at a later time.

Task 1:
Go ahead and turn on the machine and plug in the headphones.
Notes:

Located in 5 sec – said she saw the headset symbol

Task 2:
You decide that you want to play Fragile. Please proceed to do so.
Notes:

Done – 5 sec – no errors.


Task 3:
Now the song is not quite loud enough for you to hear it comfortably. Go ahead and turn up the volume. Can you tell, aside from hearing the device, how loud the volume is? How?
Notes:

Done – 3 sec – saw the lines increasing next the word volume on the display – that is how she identified the level.


Task 4:
You are tired of listening to this song and want to skip to the very next track, please go ahead.
Notes:


Done – 3 sec – clicked on the arrow keys on the bottom – no errors – says she knew what those were for.


Task 5:
Now imagine that you get a phone call. You do not want to lose your place in the song. Can you do anything about that? Do you know where you are in the song?
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Very Difficult – needed some guidance – did not recognize the pause button – one error – tried to scroll.

1. Did you notice that the play/pause buttons are the same?
No – not without some help.

Task 6:
The song has finished and you want to go to song # 8 because your friend said that when he or she recorded the songs they recorded one of your favorites as track number 8.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Easy – no errors – 5 sec.

1. How did you locate the track number you were at?
Notes:

The bar in the right hand corner said so.


2. How did you detect that you have been able to select the song?

It was highlighted and the name and the artist were listed below.

Task 7:
Next, let us pretend that you want to listen to the radio. Your favorite station is 100 AM. Please go ahead and turn the radio on and move to that station.
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Very Difficult – 25 sec – no errors.

Notes:

She found it very annoying that she had to click the arrow key so many times.

Task 8:
Can you tell how much battery life the device still has in it?
Rate the task’s difficulty for us:

Easy – 3sec – no errors.

Notes: Saw the bar in the right hand corner.




Task 9:
You have to run. Please go ahead and turn off the machine. Assume that the battery is low. Describe how you would recharge it while you are away. This will complete this scenario. Thank you.
Notes
She say saw the batteries – she was not sure right away if they could recharge. She needed help determining it they were rechargeable or not.

1. Could you please comment about the appearance of this new MP3 player?

Looks like a palm pilot – not very technical looking.


2. What did you like about this MP3 player?


Easy to switch between radio and MP3

3. What did you dislike?


Arrow moved you too slow between radio stations.

4. Do you think you would want more features with this player? If yes, which ones?


Yes – would like to skip through the radio ½ way at a time.

5. Do you think that this new player is easy to carry?

Yes – a strap would be helpful too.


6. Do you think that this new player is simple to operate?

Yes

7. Rate this player compared to any other portable music players that you own on a scale of 1 to 4? 1 being very good and 4 being very bad

2 – Problem with the radio – not sure how you get the songs in there – asked if it came preprogrammed.
