Hi, Jose! I'm a Dueñas, too. I'm Filipino, and currently based here in Quezon City, Philippines. and..could barely speak and understand spanish. :-)

Anyway, i'm quite interested on the history of how our surname came to be here in the Philippines (not that i'm into history or what. just want to get to know the roots of my surname). maybe you could share your knowledge and enlighten me on this.

A roommate of mine when i was still staying in a dorm in the University of the Philippines - Diliman (where i'm taking my masters degree) told me that the first Dueñas who came to the Philippines was a portuguese merchant. she came across this information in her research for her dissertation on Filipino religions.

tnx in advance.

eves

[> Re: my surname is dueñas -- christian dueñas, 11:45:04 06/27/07 Wed

I was told by some elderly people with the surname Dueñas that near Altamira, Spain there was a convent and the nuns were referred to as las Dueñas. people from around the area were given the surname de las Dueñas by the notaries and the de la was dropped. some of the relatives of Napoleon III (through Doña Eugénie de Montijo) were involved in the French invasion of Mexico and stayed. that might be why Dueñas isn't as common a surname in Hispanic America as is say gonzales, or rodriguez.

My father is from Mexico, his name Jose Luis Dueñas, his father's name was Gregorio Duenas. We are in El Paso, Texas with cousins with the Dueñas surname and Hernandez. I was born in El Paso but was raised south central New Mexico! Growing up the only Dueñas in the phonebook was my father and uncle with someone named Angel. Now there are several including my cousins and there children. I've met several people with the Dueñas name but not even related. They are Mexican, Puerto Rican, Salvadoran and Dominican! Want to go to Palencia,Spain where the name originated.

I am also a Dueñas, and I grew up in the Los Angeles, California area. My father's parents were born in Mexico, but their parents immigrated from Spain and France. I still have distant relatives with the surname Dueñas in Jalisco, Mexico.

My maiden name is Duenas. My father was born in Cuba. I have yet to set anyone with the last name Duenas.I always believed I had Spaniard descent because of my last name. I recently took a DNA test and had only 6 percent Iberian which I found strange.

Hi everyone! My last name is Dueñas and I come from southern Philippines. To my knowledge I have no ancestors in Guam or any other Spanish colonies, and my Spanish lineage has yet to be proven via DNA test if I ever get to do that. I would love to know more about the origin of the name and who my ancestors are!
