Subject: What irritates me about the health care debate

Is primarily two things, and the lack of any real national discussion on these items is simply poisonous, IMHO.

First, the insistance that there will be "no tax increase" blah blah blah.

Oh, get over yourselves. If I'm suddenly required to buy something, that I didn't have to buy before, and this requirement is set up by law, then it's a tax. If that tax isn't collected by the government, it's still no less a tax. This whole business of "taxes not collected by the government" is a major pain in the ass, frankly. And it's big big big business for the insurance companies. Car insurance is a tax. Health insurance is going to be a tax. Carbon caps are a tax. And not having the tax collected and administered by the government means a totally inefficient taxation system and a helluva lot of wasted money in the process, just to maintain the illusion that "we aren't taxing you".

Second is the idea, implicit in the debate, that insurance companies "deserve" huge profits, as much as they can scam out of the public. GIVE ME A BREAK! This is NUTS! Insurance companies have a captive clientele, the purchase of their product is MANDATED and they beg (force) Congress for disaster declarations whenever they can manage it, so they don't pay, the taxpayer does. Insurance companies should be managed as public utilities were in the fifties, 5% profit per year guaranteed, and nothing over that allowed. Since they actually have capital requirements of about nothing (since utilities aren't allowed to speculate in the markets) they could make that much off simple investment in guaranteed bonds, year over year. Good Grief!

This has to be the most ridiculous "debate" anyone has ever seen, and it's based on pussyfooting around the above facts while keeping the campaign contribution money coming down the pike! ARRRRRHHHH!
