I agree with you that such thinking is ridiculous. In order for it to be a ratings ploy, then one of the following must be true or assumed.

1. If FOX had pushed the same-gender sex scene in the prior advertisements (which they did not), then it might have been a ratings ploy to recuit new viewers. Thus, only those viewers who were going to watch the show anyway would see the sex scenes.

2. If Mutant Enemy assumed that the Firefly series had nothing else to offer beyond the same-gender sex scene, then it might have been a ratings ploy. In other words, if ME believed the current fans were likely to abandon the show without gratuitous sex scenes, then it would be a ratings ploy. If that were the case, then I would have expected more than a back rub. Besides, the episode easily stood its ground, without gratuitous sex scenes.

In conclusion, FOX did not attempt to recruit new viewers with advertisements of gratuitous sex scenes and ME did not attempt to hold onto existing viewers with gratuitous sex scenes.
