In reply to: Paddy (Scotland) 's message, "The Falklands 1982 & the Commonwealth" on 16:25:41 10/20/04 Wed

I don't believe that the other Realms needed to do anything more than give moral support. We had assembled and it was given a Royal send off ('The Empire Strikes Back!' was the headline of several newspapers) within forty-eight hours of recieving the intelligence. Other realms could easily have taken longer, especially while they debated their stance.

Moreover, it was important that, as an ally of the USA, Britian proved that it could and would defend its citizens without outside assistance. The USSR was watching the whole thing very closely.

In another display of Labour's military genius, HMS Splendid was decommissioned six years after receiving an expensive conversion to fire cruise missiles at Kosovo.
