| Subject: The Falklands 1982 & the Commonwealth | |

] Date Posted: 16:25:41 10/20/04 Wed It was stated elsewhere on this board, quite correctly, that in the aftermath of the invasion of the Falklands the U.S.A. sent a delegation to mediate between the two sides but on the basis that Argentina now held the islands. A disgrace. Indeed, the only major power that provided real help and assistance from day one and that recognised fully the illegality of the situation internationally was France. I have read that the Argentinian admiralty had the Belgrano in her position South-West of the islands (where she was eventually, & controvertially, sunk) partially to intercept any Australian or New Zealand ships that had crossed the pacific in aid of the British Task Force. My question, what did the commonwealth countries have as a position & what did they do to support the U.K. during the Crisis of 1982? Date Posted: 12:30:59 10/21/04 Thu I don't believe that the other Realms needed to do anything more than give moral support. We had assembled and it was given a Royal send off ('The Empire Strikes Back!' was the headline of several newspapers) within forty-eight hours of recieving the intelligence. Other realms could easily have taken longer, especially while they debated their stance. Moreover, it was important that, as an ally of the USA, Britian proved that it could and would defend its citizens without outside assistance. The USSR was watching the whole thing very closely. Date Posted: 16:31:00 10/25/04 Mon This is just insane. The UK is the USA's major ally, we have a big bad past behind us just waiting for use as 'justification' of terrorism, no security measures to protect the leaders of our country to speak of, and they're trying to cut defence budgeting? If I was in charge, I'd double or triple defence expenditure (or certainly make it work better), low taxes be damned. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 14:46:00 01/24/05 Mon the Sea Harriers of the RN when the Argies invaded were ill equipped for Air-Air warfare, and were only lightly armed for Air-ground warfare. The Americans knew they had to keep freindly with the argentineans who were nig anti-communist, but still supported Britain, in fact in a huge bt quite way. America immediatly upgraded the RN Sea Harriers with new Side Winder missiles and Air-Air weapons systems which proved to be the difference in the naval air war that was to eventuate, the US also gave the RN many anti shipping missiles, however they were never used. Without the harrier upgrades it would have been impossible or at least very costly for the RN to take back the islands. New Zealand would never have been able to help, barely any war fighting rocres and no way of transporting them. Australia could not really help, our subs could have joined but in deep cold water and with the RN nukes they wouldnt have contributed much, and our carriers were much, much too valuable to risk, especially seen as we were going to buy Britain's in a few years (but the argies cancelled those plans), no soldiers were needed and probably couldnt be brought into the area of ops anyway, and our surface forces were maybe the only useful thing that could have been deployed, but they wouldnt have added much. So whilst Australia could have helped, it would not have been smart. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
