The UK is the USA's major ally, we have a big bad past behind us just waiting for use as 'justification' of terrorism, no security measures to protect the leaders of our country to speak of, and they're trying to cut defence budgeting? Date Posted: 14:46:00 01/24/05 Mon the Sea Harriers of the RN when the Argies invaded were ill equipped for Air-Air warfare, and were only lightly armed for Air-ground warfare. The Americans knew they had to keep freindly with the argentineans who were nig anti-communist, but still supported Britain, in fact in a huge bt quite way. America immediatly upgraded the RN Sea Harriers with new Side Winder missiles and Air-Air weapons systems which proved to be the difference in the naval air war that was to eventuate, the US also gave the RN many anti shipping missiles, however they were never used. Without the harrier upgrades it would have been impossible or at least very costly for the RN to take back the islands. New Zealand would never have been able to help, barely any war fighting rocres and no way of transporting them. Australia could not really help, our subs could have joined but in deep cold water and with the RN nukes they wouldnt have contributed much, and our carriers were much, much too valuable to risk, especially seen as we were going to buy Britain's in a few years (but the argies cancelled those plans), no soldiers were needed and probably couldnt be brought into the area of ops anyway, and our surface forces were maybe the only useful thing that could have been deployed, but they wouldnt have added much. So whilst Australia could have helped, it would not have been smart. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
