So like nick said I finally got my ass moving on this thing. I picked up a form from isr to get a multipurpose room and I should have everything filled out for it pretty soon. My main concern for this tourney is to get as many ellite players as possible, which means I would want to make it most convient for them to come.
Some things I have been thinking about and working on, give me some feedback:
- Date: april 3 or 4(saturday or sunday). I know this is kind of close to the West Lafayette tourney, but it is 1 week after spring break, which is probably a good time for everyone. I would be willing to move it up though, but that means we would get less time to promote it and set it up.
- Seeds: Although we can probably pick and choose seeds for the best, i expect there to be a lot of people there and I don't feel like doing that for everyone one of them. On the other had I have made a touney program that allows you to sign up with "friends." To sign up with friends basically seeds you so you play them at the latest possible matches. This way everyone can get in new competition. You don't have to knock out your friends. And the better players can put themselves in the same friends group. I realize this could get out of control though, so I would limit a friends group to 4 or 5, because I could easly form a group of about 10 to 15 people, but that would be ridiculous. Perhaps this is a bad idea all together, give me some feed back.
-Stages: Final D, BattleField, Fountain, Kirby and poke-floats(just kidding). I know there is a movement to put pokemon stadium in as well. And although I would not enjoy playing there, I can see the purpose it serves, so if everyone wants it in really desperately then it is fine by me. Stage select is random between these stages or you can agree upon stage before the game with the person you are playing.
-Lives: 5 stock. This will be a double elimination tourament, I expect to get over 50 probably closer to 70 people, so 10 stock would be insane. Not to mention 10 stock tourament matches are the most painfull thing anywhere ever.
-No Items(of course) and must be same character thoughout tourament.
-Prizes: I have had some debates over whether to give out cash as the prizes. Personally I think cash is a little tacky for a small tourament, plus there is a perpective issue. "Hey lets all put in 3 bucks, have a tournament and the winners get the pot".. now why would anyone want to put in money, if they knew they were not going to win. Because I don't plan on winning, and I am sure other out there know their limits as well. "Hey, i'll pay 3 dollars to play in a tourament and the winners just get some prizes. I hope I win prizes, but it will be fun to play anyway.". I know these argument are kind of pointless, since they deal with perspective. Also, if a gift certificate is given away you will be forced to buy some sort of prize to remember the tournament by and not spend the cash on food. But I was just thinking gift certificates in % cash values to eb for 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Maybe throw in some T-shirts or something like that. And maybe some small candy for everyone who enters. Of course the argument still goes on and trust me my friends who are for cash prizes have made fun of me enough for my "dumbass" arguments.
-Projection screen. There is a projection screen we can probably use at isr. I don't know if i personally would like it though, because of possible picture quality, lighting issues, etc.. but if others like it or want to try it, I am all for it then. I guess we'll at least fire it up once we get into isr and see how it looks.
-The other tv's are looking good. I have a 32" tube tv I can bring. There is a 40 inch flat screen(glass) sony tv in ISR, as well as my roommate who has a nice flat screen tv and I am sure I can grab some from other places too. 4 TV's should do it. And we like to run very efficent tournaments, I think Andy back me up on that. Or at least I hope he can, I thought we did a pretty good job. TV's were always in use.... ANYway we have all the melee's, controllers and gamecubes we need as well.
-As far as people coming, best possible senerio would be: All chicago ellites, andy's crew, nick's crew, walled's crew, possibly the guys who hold the flamebowser tourney, and then if we post at isr, 6-pack, around campus, plus the Video Game alliance student organization, smashboareds and other websites. We can probably get around 30 to 40 more suckas to fund the pot. I say the more the merier. More games, more competition, more intensity, more of an audience, more everything. It could be nice to get a small group of extremely elite players, but I would be for a really big tourney here, that we can host again next year.
-Okay, I have done way way way too much talking and explaining. I have a tendency to be a little verbose. So perhaps you hate all of my ideas, perhaps you like them. Give me some feed back, hopefully we can get together and smash soon and talk about this. I'll keep my ass moving on it. The first and most major thing is to pick a date and place and all else can fall into place. I am more for sunday than saturday, but understand if it has to be saturday for driving purpose or something like that. E-mail me back, or just, tag a reply onto this gigantic, and terribly misspelled post.
