Subject: Mizzen stay sail

I hate to sound like an idiot, but here goes. Tivoli came with 4 sails, the 4th being a light weight colorful sail that I am assuming is the mizzen stay sail, (I have seen pictures of sailing under the staysail so I am sure that is what it is) I dont know how to use it. My mizzen has one halyard, is it hoisted with the mizzen? I have seen pictures of the sail flying, howevever, not sure how to get it up (dont be lewd), or where it is secured? Any help would be appreciated.

[> Where's the mizzen mast, sailor? -- Lawrence Killingsworth M40 Ta' Ata Ori, - Wednesday - 08/ 5/09 - 11:59am

I don't know Cap'n, how long has it been mizzen?
Ha, ha, that joke never gets old!

Well, Mike, you came to the right place. We were flying our mizzen stays'l on Ta' Ata Ori just last weekend. Here's how it works (for us, anyway): We have a mizzen stays'l halyard that comes out the forward side of the mizzen mast -- so that's the head. The tack has a line that is attached to a turning block at the base of the main mast and is secured to a cleat on the forward end of the main boom. (The tack line could also be run through a turning block at the base of the aft main mast shroud -- port or starboard, depending on the wind -- but the base of the main mast is best.) The clew is sheeted through a turning block that is way aft on the mizzen boom and is secured to a cleat in the cockpit.
The mizzen stays'l is great fun to fly on a good beam or broad reach and we like to use it in conjunction with our spinnaker/drifter.
Downside: you can't tack it. To tack, you have to strike the mizzen stays'l and re-set it on the other side of the vessel.
If you look at the Ta' Ata Ori section of this web site, you'll find one good picture of us flying the mizzen stays'l in very light air.
Hope this is helpful.
By the way, Mike, I'll be getting in some serious blue-water sailing in November. I've signed on as crew aboard the schooner Virginia, for a trip from Charleston to Bermuda. http://www.schoonervirginia.org Can't wait.

[> [> Its still missing..... -- Mike Anthony, - Wednesday - 08/ 5/09 - 9:46pm

Hi, good to hear from you, you will have a great time on the sail to Bermuda, hope to see some pics. on to the stays'l. Do you have to pulleys on the mizzen, I have only one and it is for the mizzen halyard. As far as I know this is the orginal setup for this boat. I wonder if I could put a turning block or something similar on the mizzen mast. I have an original watercolor painting of this boat showing the excact stays'l I have flying, so somewhere they had it rigged up. Wish me luck and thanks for the information it will be helpful. Again have a great time on your cruise...

[> Stays'l Halyard -- Lawrence Killingsworth M40 Ta' Ata Ori, - Thursday - 08/ 6/09 - 12:01pm

When we had the new aluminum masts built last year, we had the riggers put in both a mizzen halyard and a mizzen stays'l halyard. The old wooden mizzen mast we replaced did not have a block for a stays'l halyard.

I don't know exactly how the top of your mizzen mast is configured, but I would think it would be possible for you to rig a stays'l halyard block up there on the forward side of the mast to run an external halyard. Or if you've got an unused sheave up there, maybe you could run a halyard up the mast and use it -- just come out the front rather than the back of the mast. Depends on how much work you want to do, hanging from a bosn's chair. Or I'm sure there are professional riggers down there in JAX (you still in JAX?) who could do it for you -- not a huge project for a pro.

Anyway, you would really enjoy using the stays'l on a reach. It looks cool, is easy to handle and it boosts your power.

Fair winds and following seas,

[> mizzen staysail halyard -- Steve M-32 SEAN O'Sea, - Thursday - 08/ 6/09 - 12:35pm

I don't know how the 40 is rigged but take a look at your mizzen masthead fitting. On my 32 there is a tang that is forward and points up to be used for the triatic stay and then there is one below that that will be used to attach a block for the staysail halyard. I'm guessing on yours but that is how my 32 is set up.

I just looked at my mizzen mast hanging on the wall in my shop and it is rigged as Steve described.

I certainly do have a tang off the forward part of the mizzen. I will rig that with a block and with the information from Lawrence I should be able to use my very colorful and cooling looking stays'l. Thanks for all the help, I am still trying to find the time to post a bunch of new pics of Tivoli, hopefully I can include one of the stays'l flying as well.

Again Thanks...
