Many of us former Ramband members auditioned for, and actually played in several college marching bands, college symphonic bands, college jazz bands, and/or orchestras. I know many Ramband members participated in the UTSA, SWTSU, University of Texas, University of Houston, and Baylor bands. I think it would be awesome if we could compile a list of the college bands that we all joined.

I played in the Notre Dame Marching and Concert Bands. I played clarinet in the marching band, and bass clarinet in the concert band. I worked in the band office my sophomore and junior year as a "secretary to the directors;" part of my financial aid package. My junior and senior year, I was elected VP of the band. Concert band tours my freshman, sophomore, and junior years allowed me to see parts of the United States I had never seen before (New England, the Midwest, the Mid-Atlantic states, and the South). Also got to travel to Tokyo. All thanks to band...

ONe of my most memorable moments was in the 1979 Cotton Bowl when ND played Houston. It was a Ramband Reunion in that I hooked up with Chuck Kuentz, Sue Berg Kuentz, and Alan Valentine. A winter storm had caked the Cotton Bowl with a thick glaze of ice. Upon arriving to the stadium, both bands had to kick and shatter the ice off of our seats. Before the game, the Cotton Bowl officials used the Zamboni from the hockey rink next dook to clear the ice off the field!! Worse marching conditions I ever faced; but as I recall, the Houston and ND bands performed exceptionally well despite the conditions. I still remember seeing Alan Valentine after the game...

The previous year, ND had played Texas in the Cotton Bowl (January 1978). A Ramband Reunion with Lisa Sweeney, Cheryl Coyle and yours truly. I remember during one of the rehearsals, standing next to the Longband announcer (Wally Pryor?); I was wearing a ND band jacket. He complained to me about the cold (which was nothing compared to the cold the next year), and he dismissed me by saying "you're probably use to this..." I'll never forget the shocked look he gave me when I told him I was not use to it because I was from San Antonio, and that I too was freezing...

I went (believe it or else) to Bible College in Joplin MO directly after my Sr. Yr. 1977 and 78. I was a member of the Impact Brass & Singers, and we travelled nearly EVERY weekend. There was NO SCHOOL on Mondays, as most students were either out on ministries, in groups touring, etc. This gave everyone a travel day BACK from Sundays, too. I played drumset, and we had brass, piano, bass, 10 singers, and a five screen slide presentation that went with the music, skits and programs we presented. A LOAD of good times. I remember coming to San Antonio on our summer tour, and Cheryl, Diego and Travis came to see me!!! That was SO fun seeing them again, and Cheryl in some little HOTTIE red, skimpy skirt shook my Bible College soul. LOL

I had the pleasure of recording several times at Bill Gaither's studio in Indiana (what a sucky state!) and some of THEEEE coldest times I EVER remember were on tour, esp. in Indiana, where one weekend it was 52 BELOW, and they were arresting folks for going outside. Saw mostly the midwest on two summer tours and weekends were generally a state or two away, a lot in OK, TX, KN, MO, IL, and we did do a pretty good tour of TX from Amarillo to wayyyyyy out west, to S.A. then to Louisiana, Kentucky, some of the BEST times of my life. Playing before TEN THOUSAND in Cincinnati had to be one of the WEIRDEST and coolest exper. ever on stage. All you could see was a MASS of people, but on stage I felt small, and we played just as we normally do and it was quite an amazing feeling seeing the crowd react and clap.

We toured during Spring Break AND Thanksgiving week, so I really lost touch with my family during these times, so it was important to keep in touch by MAIL. MAIL was GOLD back in the days..... but IMPACT became my family. We had an IMPACT Reunion about 6 yrs ago and I saw my old college girlfriend, NEITHER of us knew the other was coming, and we had a GREAT time catching up, and sev. other old band members were there.

ON to the PRESENT!!!!! I know this is long, but hey, you ARE reading it, so I know you are enjoying my RAMblings.

NOW I am in the church orchestra here in Baton Rouge LA, and I absolutely ROCK and FUNK those hymns and choruses... I LOVE taking an oldie and really making it different, "coloring" it my own way, but the MOST important thing in ANY music group, as a drummer, is to make SURE EVERYONE knows where ONE is, no matter what. NOTHING worse than a drummer who doesn't do that, or OVER plays. I cant STAND that. I look for a different sound, different feel, but most of all as long as I am keeping it together and having fun, THAT is MY moment. I absolutely LOVE it!!!

I have become a HUUUUUUUUUUGE collector of ethnic percussion over the years, some brand name stuff, some authentic stuff from other countries. I am DEFINITELY addicted, as well as an EXPERT in Ebay, and to do it well really takes constant searching and not giving up or getting discouraged if you miss something.

If ANYONE has ANY questions about ANY drum, percussion item or rhythm instrument, I have studied A LOT on my own and thru the internet and would be GLAD to try to help anyone interested in percussion, or at least direct you to where you might find answers or cool websites. I can also direct you to sites that SELL instruments. There are "touristy" items out there, then there's the REAL stuff. I can help.

LUVYALL and miss ALL YALL in S.A. especially!!!!!

RD

I played in the UTSA orchestra, wind ensemble, contemperary ensemble and symphonic band (on clarinet). I tried to play in as many groups as I could and on as many different instruments as they would allow me to learn. What a great experience!!!

In case you can't put a finger on me, I had three other brothers who also played in the band: Mark (French Horn - '72), Gary (Cornet - '74), Scott (Saxophone - '75) and me (Trombone - '76).

I marched my freshman year for the Brigham Young University band. Band trips (on the house!) that year included a basketball trip to Fort Collins, CO (Colorado State) and Laramie, WY (Univ of Wyoming) (okay, nothing to exciting about that trip, really!!), and football trips San Diego (BYU v. San Diego State) and Orlando ([the] Tangerine Bowl - BYU v. Oklahoma State).

On the two football trips, we were able to spend a day in the two Disney parks ("-Land" and "-World"). Being in band got me from coast to coast in the two Disney parks in about 3 months!! While in Florida, we were able to arrange a behind the scenes tour of NASA and the VAB (we rode to the top!) and were introduced to a new, upcoming technology - sending information through glass wire by pulses of light - new, at least to me, at the time - 1976).

My band director that year was only a part-time staff member, who was replaced at the end of the year by full-time faculty. My director had a BRILLIANT mind! Within a couple of weeks of hearing a song on the radio, he'd have full orchestration and a marching routine worked up. We marched to medleys of theme songs from the current police shows (SWAT, Policewoman, Rockford Files, etc.) and disco tunes (Boogie Fever, That's the Way (I Like It), etc.).

After my freshman year, I left for a 2-year Mormon mission in Germany. Upon my return, I didn't have much desire to march under the new faculty direction - band seemed too vanilla and stale compared to my freshman year. So my days of playing in organized musical groups was over.

Coincidentally, the year after my director was let go in favor of a faculty member, he and a friend formed a company to help computerize marching band half-time routines. A local city asked them to write some word processing software for use within that city. That venture turned into WordPerfect (perhaps many of you used that program in your college days). Financially, his being let go was nearly infinitely beneficial compared to being a band director.

It's good to see pics of a number of ya'll. Am I the only one who doesn't look any different? ;^)

Well, I'll see if I can dig one up. I know of one place it's on the net (from two years ago), but I've got to FIND the place first!

If I find it, I'll link it, otherwise I'll have to scan a recent one and find a hosting site. any suggestions??

Good to renew our old friendships after a "few" years!!

Matt

I went to Texas Tech University and was very active in their music program. I marched in their award-winning marching band and also participated in their jazz ensemble, choral groups, and trombone choir. While being a member of the marching band, we were the recipient of the Sudler Award Trophy (for being the best college marching band in the nation.) I had a very fun and exciting time at Tech, and got much of my foundation from both Mr. Meza and Mr. Dierolf.

I just graduated from JMHS in 2004 and was the band president. I am very active in The University of Texas Longhorn Band and that has been a blast. I'm in both the football and basketball band and couldn't think of a better way to keep my streak of awesome band experiences running.

I was the section leader for the UNT Green Brigade trumpets 2003-2006. I also play lead trumpet in The University of North Texas Lab Bands where I recieved my B.A. in Music Education. Currently, I am a Master student in Jazz Studies.
I owe my drive and passion for music to The Ram Band, Rey Meza, and the one and only.......Wallace Dierolph.
Thank You,
