Anyone out there from 78-82? I played bells during those years, and just found this website. Now living outside Austin. Just curious.

I don't know how many are aware of this, but one of jazz's greats passed away this past Wednesday.... Those of you that were in the stage band will be very familiar with him, as he was a model for us.. Maynard Ferguson passed away August 23 in California. He was 78, and believe it or not was still touring. He had just returned home from playing at the Blue Note in New York.
Although Louis Armstrong was the reason I chose to play trumpet rather than trombone as my first band director wanted, it wasn't until Marshall stage band and hearing Maynard that I had purpose and a goal. He inspired me. I will never forget the first time I heard him...my jaw hit the floor...I didn't even know it was possible to do the things he did with a trumpet! WOW!
I know he influenced many young trumpeters thru out his career, and his music helped introduce just as many to jazz.
If you care to visit his website, it's www.maynardferguson.com

It's been almost TWO YEARS since the last post here.
Class of 76, it's almost time for our THIRTIETH (ouch) reunion.... also time for another Band Reunion as well, which, if coordinated correctly could possibly be pulled off in the same time frame to allow attendees to see ALL their friends in one weekend.

I propose a THIRTIETH Bash, somewhere not so CROWDED and small as last time, but with the vibrancy and fun of the band reunion. Any ideas out there, gang? I also think ALL the DRUMMERS able to attend should bring some type of drum, and we will jam and entertain in a Drum Circle, led by, well, ME, of COURSE!!! I have several Djembes I can bring, I will allow others to strike (with care) and many other instruments that can be used, but I'll need ALL interested folks to bring their own PERCUSSION INSTRUMENT as well. And yes, I still have a wood block, just for Scottie Wilson. (heh heh, old joke) There is NO RIGHT and WRONG at a drum circle, only unity, FUNK, grooooove and rhythm. EVERYone participates that wants to, but follows a general lead, then we can syncopate, punctuate, and all enjoy.

Open to ANY and all ideas.

Apparently, the Churchill Charger Band has been invited to march in the 2005 Rose Bowl Parade. Congrats to them. One of the attorneys in my office, sent me an solicitation, asking for a contribution. In the message, Churchill is claiming to be the first band from San Antonio and South Texas to march in the Rose Bowl Parade. I responded with a pretty strong email message, with a link to this site, pointing out that the RAM BAND was there first. Some things never change....

Well, after many months and several discussions, TRIPS back here to S.A. and LOTTTTTS of prayer, I have finally COME HOME to S.A. after a 18 yr marriage ended in divorce. The good thing is, my son is in great hands, will NOT be uprooted his Sr. Yr. as I tragically was, and we are close and TIGHT and we're gonna all be fine. If there was a "good divorce" this was one... CIVIL, easy, no fighting, no legal wars, nuttin.

I moved back HOME to S.A. the last weekend of September, and have been here about a month, got a retail job at Dillard's North Star, and am waiting to buy a house... got an offer out, just waiting to hear from the buyer....

THEN I can begin my MUSIC again, living my FULL life and enjoying the culture, food, WONDERFUL weather and scenery of Southwest Texas, and hopefully catch up with a lot of my old BUDS from back in the days.

LETS JAM!!!! Let's make some Music!!!!

I gotta FEVAH for some MORE COWBELL!!!!!

Hello Everyone..just found out about this site yesterday and I've been spending the last few hours checking it out and reminiscing. Talk about the floodgates opening up..wow, such great memories have been brought back, especially after seeing pics of Mr Kuentz and Mr Briggs!!
I was a member of the Ram Band from 78-82 and had the best time playing my trumpet and being a part of that organization(and both trumpets are in the attic along with old sheet music and an old JMHS mute..sorry Mr Kuentz!!) Memories of State Fairs, contests in Florida, UIL, football games, bus trips, Houston Oilers halftime, Battle of Flowers Fiesta parade in 79 (which we never got to march in because of the chaos due to the sniper)and on and on.
I missed performing in the Rose Bowl parade by a couple of years but I remember watching "my band" on TV that day and loved hearing the stories from those that were there and especially from Mr Kuentz. Anyway, thanks for a nice trip down memory lane and my very best to those I recognized in the old pics and in some earlier messages..especially to those that helped to make the freshmen of 78-79 fit right in..Laurie Hoyt, Ron Hoyt, Lora Dean, Lisa Dean, Mike Dardeman, Bubba Bergstrom, Debbie Duncan, etc etc..you may not remember but I sure do!

Does anyone know if there is a recording, or a tape of the Marshall band's Astroworld performance from 1976? I know that Mr. Kuentz showed us a film of the 1977 or 1978 marching band, but are there any recordings of the 1976 Astroworld or contest show? I think it would be great if we could find a recording, and then copy it to DVD for our personal use. If anyone is interested in assisting me trying to find a copy, please let me know. Thanks.

Today marks the 28th Anniversary of the infamous Graduation Party at Evin Planto's House. I still remember the majority of the events of this day like it was last week. The Marshall Class of 1976 was scheduled to graduate. Several of us met at Northside Stadium for a graduation rehearsal. We went through the rehearsal, and I distinctly remember our principal, John Turman, giving us the last speech, about not doing anything stupid. He used his famous "Remember-when-you-mess-with-the-bull" speech.

That evening, the Class of 1976 graduated. The class included the following: Chuck Kuentz, Travis McCown, Diego Pena, Evin Planto, Matt Williams, Carol Heskew, Mike Groves, Mike Swim, Jim Hunter, Cindy Held, Karen Hayes, and others. (Randy Duncan in absentia). The band performed Pomp and Circumstance, and the War March of the Priests.

Not long after the graduation ceremonies, the Ram Band faithul gathered at Evin Planto's house on Colony Drive. Evin arranged for parents to stay out that evening. (As I recall, they stayed at the Travelodge that use to be located at the corner of Wurzbach and IH10). THat evening, we were treated to tamales and kegs of Schiltz dark beer. That was a great party!! A lot of details regarding that get-together are best left unmentioned, and forever placed behind the misty shroud of the past. I can truly say that of all the parties I have ever attended, that one truly stands out.

All that occurred on May 28, 1976. Exactly 24 years ago, and we were there....I will be having a quiet toast at dinner with some friends to the memory of all you, and the good times we shared that evening, and throughout our times at Marshall. God bless all of you and your families...

Hello fellow Ram Banders!!! I have to say that it is very exciting to go back and look at at the wonderful pictures of other Ram Band events from back in the day. I guess you would have to say that from the day I was born I was a Ram Band member. My mother is Vicky Anderson (class of 1977) and my father is Raymond Kuentz. Both were in the band. "Big Daddy" or otherwise known as Charles Kuentz, is my grandfather.

I graduated from Marshall in 1995 and I was in the band, as well. If there are any other fellow band members from when I was in high school, give me a "shout out" so we can touch base and remember the fun days of our time!!!!
