Subject: Married vs. Single

As I was sitting here, reading all the different posts, it occured to me that there isn't much mention of spouses...There is talk of children, careers, memories etc, but nothing or very little about a significant other.

And since I am proffering the question, I'll start...

I got married when I was 24 or 25. At the time, it seemed like the right thing to do...now I know it was just temporary insanity! It lasted long enough for 3 children to come along,2 boys, and a girl and we even stayed together "for the kids" for 2 years after the divorce. That was nearly 15 years ago, and in that time I have come close a couple times, but I remain happily single at this point. Maybe someday I'll remarry, but it doesn't stand as one of my major priorities. Don't get me wrong, it would be nice to have that soulmate, someone to share life with, but I learned a long time ago that you can't be happy with someone else unless you are happy alone.

Well there it is...Would love to hear from everyone else, especially the women, so I know who I can hit on at the reunion!
What can I say...once a trumpet player, ALWAYS a trumpet player!

It's official, Rusty Wilson (athlete and math/science competitor for MHS) and I are going to be distributing a special reunion edition of the RAMPOON, at least at the Friday event in Leon Springs.

Want to get in on the action? Please write us and suggest a topic, or just pull something together and send it. No humor is too off-base ;) russell.wilson@centuryx.com and julibriggs@earthlink.net We promise not to propagate drawings or photos of holders of positions of leadership of any kind from our days at Marshall with a "would you buy a used car from this man" caption, ok?

How many of us kept up playing our instruments? Some of them were rented or we used the ones in the band hall, especially us tuba players but I picked up a second-hand (OK, it was really more like 5th or 6th hand) fiberglass Conn sousaphone a couple of years ago and have played it in some neighborhood parades on the 4th of July. Before that I borrowed tubas and baritones from local high schools or my trumpet (my original instrument that I auditioned for Mr. Lewis to get into "A" Band. I got in but the braces were too painful) ((Thank you Mr. Briggs for the suggestion to switch to the bass))to play in church and I've continued playing keyboards with small groups and worship teams. Apropos of nothing, I still have dreams about showing up late for a concert and not knowing what music we were supposed to play, or on another variation, ready to step out on the field not knowing which routine we were doing.<>

Like "the worst job I had to take to get where I am today." You know we've all "been there" by now.

Or maybe share some of their more amusing "the time I was unfairly incarcerated" tales. (Drums, Saxophones -- this is your chance to shine!)

So let's have some more answers, and questions, everybody! Why were you incarcerated (unfairly, of course)?

What would a band web site be without musician jokes?! Here are some of my favorites...

What's the difference between a bull and an orchestra?
The bull has the horns in the front and the a**hole in the back.

A conductor and a clarinetist are standing in the middle of the road. Which one do you run over first, and why?
The conductor. Business before pleasure.

How can you tell if a violin is out of tune?
The bow is moving.

What’s the difference between a viola and a coffin?
With a coffin, the corpse is on the inside.

Why are orchestra intermissions limited to twenty minutes?
So they won’t have to retrain the cellists.

How do you get a string bass to play in tune?
Chop it up and make it into a xylophone.

How do you get two piccolos to play in unison?
Shoot one.

What’s the definition of a minor second?
Two flutes playing in unison.

Why do clarinetists leave their cases on their dashboards?
So they can park in handicapped spaces.

What's the definition of "nerd?"
Someone who owns his own alto clarinet.

What’s the difference between an onion and an oboe?
Nobody cries when you chop up an oboe.

Why is a bassoon better than an oboe?
The bassoon burns longer.

What do you get when you cross a French Horn player and a goal post?
A goal post that can't march.

How many trumpet players does it take to change a light bulb?
Five - one to handle the bulb and four to tell him how much better they could have done it.

What is the difference between a dead trombone player lying in the road, and a dead country singer lying in the road?
The country singer might have been on his way to a gig.

These two euphonium players walk past a bar…
Well, it could happen!

What's the range of a tuba?
Twenty yards if you've got a good arm!

What do you call a drummer without a girlfriend?
Homeless.

What's the least-used sentence in the English language?
"Isn't that the banjo player's Porsche?"

How do you get a guitar player to turn his amp down?
Put sheet music in front of him.

Know how to make a million dollars singing jazz?
Start with two million.

The soprano, not being smart enough to use birth control, says to her saxophonist lover, "Honey, I think you better pull out now."
He replies, "Why? Am I sharp?"

What's the difference between a soprano and a piranha?
The lipstick.

What's the difference between a soprano and a Porsche?
Most musicians have never been in a Porsche.

What's the difference between an alto and a tenor?
Tenors don't have hair on their backs.

What's the definition of a male quartet?
Three men and a tenor.

What's the definition of an optimist?
A choral director with a mortgage.

Anyone have more? Add them!

- Alan

Thanks to Sue, we now have official-looking photos of Mr. Kuentz and Mr. Briggs along with Mr. Lewis.

Now we need captions for one, two, or all three beloved band directors.

Was there a nickname or favorite phrase or something that characterized these gentlemen? Post your suggestions here-- the winner gets glory and fame!

  • What do you regret not having done so far?

  • What is the best place you have been to?

  • What three words would you want on your tombstone?

  • Which is more important: art or literature?

Has anyone seen this yet? I saw the trailer for it and was immediately taken back in time to Band competitions between the different show bands. I haven't seen the movie and wonder if its worth a ticket?

Your opinion counts - sound off!
