I'm having major flashbacks here. I was googling for something else and in the results list I ran across the Marshall Band website. Too tempting to resist, had to check it out. Glad I did! This is great.

Diego and Alan, do you remember the night after a football game where I "hosted" a bunch of "you guys" at my dad's TV shop? (I was not in band, I was in Boda. But I hung out with some band people because they were COOOOOL.) I turned on every Zenith stereo system that was in the display area and I cranked all the dials to near maximum when Pink Floyd came on. Anybody else care to admit being there that night? Chief Bill Staniford of Leon Valley Police has a few spaces on the burglary report probably that need to be filled in still. Turned out, he scoped us out and could see it looked fairly harmless, but he did let my folks know what I had been up to the next day...

Diego, I must apologize to you in case I did not do it before. You called your folks to check in like a good son and while you were on the phone I leaned close and yelled various incriminating (and totally false) things like "Don't bogart that joint, man!" and other helpful suggestions. As I recall, you didn't get pissed off really and that was probably because your parents knew (I hope) you were not a stoner. I heard rumors that there WERE actual stoners at John Marshall, but I never really knew any and I suppose that was all a big lie since it wasn't really fashionable to do drugs in the '70's.

Right? ahahahahahahah. Ahem.

So, Diego, for real. I'm sorry I yelled that stuff while you were trying to check in! It was not nice and not called for! (Diego and I went to Catholic school together a couple of years, so he should understand the pathology of my guilt complex.)

It's nice to see pictures of you guys and to see that so many of you have a nice perpetual reunion thing going on.

Keep it up - sounds like fun.

- Bill

greetings all you former fellow band members -

i just finished reading alan valentines biography of success, and i can tell you first hand, life has it's share of ups and downs, sometimes more downs that ups. well, don't get me wrong, my life for me is pretty good overall, but, i've known a few others who were in band, and some have had a hard time getting all of life together.

funny thing is, i would have expected alan valentine to have been one of the lesser blessed in life. yet, i did not know him hardly at all, just my impression from a distance. i seem to have this memory of him burning rubber in that old volkswagon of his...

for those who do not remember me, i was the youngest of the 3 band members, Scott (drummer), Bryan (trumpet), and me, trombone. I will not be attending the reunion for several reasons, the most major being that my wife's sister is getting married that weeked (and it is a BIG - HUGE - Wonderful event!).

But, my purpose in writing is to just make this statement, those who read these really wonder biographies, of various classmates, and how successful they've been, ultimately, what makes a life success is your eventual outcome. many would consider Elvis Presley to have been a huge success, and yet, dying on the toilet, with a feeling of near hopelessness, is in many eyes near a total failure.

Me, i have had my shares of ups and downs, but when i consider that i am still married to the same person (Valerie - a NON bandie!), since 1981, i know that having love of someone you love is far more important that any of the millions i have made (just kidding).

No, probably the most important thing in my life is hearing the whisper of God in my heart, telling me his little secrets, his quiet words of love and appreciation, and, knowing the love of your savior is more that any success or promotion, or any kind of huge bank account.

So how has your life played out these 20+ years? do not be ashamed of your life of averageness, as it is not the bank account, nor the number of limo's, nor the number of names you can drop (and please, i do NOT mean to say anything against alan valentine!).

Recently, Lisa's family lost their home to the wildfires in southern California. Her reply when asked what her fellow Ram Band members could do to help them recover: "Really, the only thing I need from the band group is old photos they might have from the years we were in band and new photos from the reunion."

Lisa's new address for anyone having extra or duplicate photos is 9953 Courtyard Dr., San Diego Ca 92131. Her telephone number remains the same, as does her email address. They were fortunate to find another place to call home in the same neighborhood allowing their daughter to remain in the same school.

How many of YALL out there think it would be fun to have a THEN and NOW page, with a picture or ourselves from The Era, and one of us now? Maybe a funny caption with the old, and a "where we are now" short bio with the new?

Robin? You up to it? Whatta yall think?

SOME of you will not participate, I know, but that only diminishes the fun of it all. We are all friends, so ?

LETS DO IT!!!!

Send in your favorite 70's picture (maybe Robin can group the page links by decades, LOL) and send in one of you NOW, current, within the year 2003. (there I go makin all kinda work for Robin, but she's worth it)

Well hey guys, this site is awesome and I’m really impressed. I just graduated and attending UT Austin and actually in the Longhorn band. I was wondering if yall just wanted to create a huge alum band or just have drinks afterward. I assure you I would have fun either way, but I have a lot of friends who graduated around me who would love to tell and hear stories about Marshall. Thanks!

Well, the mini-reunion last night was a lot of fun. Marshall lost the game, of course, and there was a plague of crickets, but we pulled through and even met up with some stragglers at Floore's Country Store afterwards.

The band uniforms are flashier than our red/white/maroon wool things: lots of feathers (on the shakos) and sequins, gloves and gauntlets. The marching is different, too (what was that style called, guys?).

The band did more dancing than playing music in the stands, and frankly, their attitude was a bit "lacks-adaisical." Some of them didn't bother to pick up their instruments during songs, the tubas kept playing some monotonous rhythm, and there were many visits from civilian girlfriends.

They made up for it with the half-time show, though. Marshall's show took place after the game because the lame homecoming ceremony took up too much time. They're competing today at UIL at Southwest. We will raise a bottle or can to their success tonight at Mark's house.

Buenos Dias, Howdies, and Good Morning!
Here y'all are, finally found you!
David Harris chased down my mom in San Antonio to find me up here in Sooner Land the Friday of the reunion - almost enough notice.
I really wished I could've been down there with everybody to ponder the antics of the past and, really, see if I could recognize everybody! A quick personal snapshot: I'm married (will wonders never cease?!)to a wonderful human being by the name of Alba. We've got a pretty gosh darn precious 9 month old daughter by the name of Sofia Michele, and life just doesn't get any better than when you look upon your child and know that you're looking at Heaven, itself...MyMyMy.

That's it for now - shoot me an email @ matthew_weaver@odoc.state.ok.us, or post a diddy right heyarn.

Ciao,

Matthew

Mark sent a message recently, saying:

=========
The next reunion will be during The John Marshall High School Homecoming the weekend of October 17, 2003. We are planning to go to the football game (with instruments, I hope everyone has been practicing) on Friday night and go out after the game for drinks and dancing. We will get together again Saturday evening for food, dancing, and family fun. The cost for football tickets on Friday and food and dancing on Saturday will be approximately $25.00 person. Other Friday night costs will be on your own. The $25.00 is a guess-timate. I will have a final amount soon. You will be receiving periodic updates and information over the next two months. If you have any suggestions or want to help with the October event please let me know. If you are planning to attend please RSVP as soon as possible. Stay in touch.
==========

Please contact Mark at stephens.m.a@centurytel.net to RSVP or to be added to his contact list if you did not receive his latest message.

Hope to see you there!
