The ending couplet describes the poet's undying love for the Lady even though she is not so physically attractive. He explains that her true beauty lies beneath the skin - in her heart. The couplet alters the meaning of this sonnet dramatically at the very end. It proves that true love sees deeper than what the eye can see.

Shakespeare mocks traditional sonnets by deciding to write one about an unattractive lady. Usually, poets would write flattering sonnets dedicated to wealthy patrons in hope that they would pay money to the author for the poem. However, in this situation, Shakespeare insults the woman throughout the entire poem, which would not be the wisest thing to do if he was hoping for financial payments from her. These elements are what sets Shakespeare apart from other poets and their traditional sonnets.
