Subject: So - why not?

I don't think she had "personal ambition" in the same way that Paul did. Rather, I think she had a firmly-held view of what was *right* for the organization, was completely convinced that she knew "what was right" better than anyone else, and was zealously determined to see that "what was right" was carried out.

I'm not disagreeing, because this isn't something I've ever thought about all that much. I'm just curious, now that I am thinking about it.

Granting that the above is a form of personal ambition - was she more interested in preserving Section as it was, or in pursuing Section's overall mission (the vague one from the opening montage being the closest statement I ever heard of that)?

Also - perhaps unintentionally - the picture of Madeline that the above gives is of a person who has become quite rigid. Seems to me that this is a weakness that she would have exploited in another....do you see it as a weakness in her? (If I'm right in reading into your short sentences a rigidity of opinion and thought...)

As for what a woman 'ought' to do? Well - in my world, a woman in Madeline's position would very definitely be looking to elbow Paul aside or out or dead and take all the glory she deserved directly onto her own shoulders....I'm not sure if she 'ought' to or not, but in the dog eat dog world of Section - it suddenly seems strange to me that Madeline didn't appear to be playing that game. Or to want anything else either.

I know there is endless speculation on the subject of Michael's ambitions or lack there of - but whatever your position, if any, on that - I think canon made it clear that he definitely had things he *wanted* for himself, mainly Nikita of course - but also Adam - and so he wanted the power to get those things. But, what did Madeline want?

But, I never saw Madeline wanting anything beyond the end of a particular mission. I never saw her pursuing a private agenda, personal or professional - and so, I wondered why not? If Adrian could run Section, why not Madeline? What did she get from working for Paul (besides nearly blown up along with the remnant of Red Cell...) that she could not have achieved with herself directly in charge?
