that AU stories do increase quite a bit once canon is closed in any given fandom. As time goes on, it gets boring rehashing the same old canon material, but AU can keep things fresh. It seems to me that AU makes up the *majority* of LFN fanfic these days, and has for quite a while.

I'd be really curious to hear why writers of AU stories have chosen to do AU -- am I right about it being a way to keep things fresh? Or is there a different motivation?
