The performance that was staged by Bernice and Jason on Thursday was great. Both of you really played your part quite well and Carolyn did a great job directing them.

Someone posed a question in class along the line of how Bernice and Jason (who have different cultural/racial identities) felt playing their roles. I wanted to ask Bernice a question along the same line. How did she feel like an Asian playing the role of a Black woman? I wonder whether Jason and Bernice's own cultural identities did affect how they performed the play. It is interesting how the play is layered because each of the characters are playing off on the stereotypes about particular groups of people, and for Bernice and Jason, how did you feel playing such roles and to what extent did your own cultural/racial backgrounds got utilized in the performance?

Who has the power in the play? I don't know if that is clear cut. I thought that power shifted between Jason and Bernice and it appears they are both playing off each other's power. Jason (his character) present little scenarios that makes Bernice (her character) confronts him. They are both playing off the perceived notions and stereotypes of different groups of people. It was in the course of their conversation that it appears that all these elements of race begin to come out. Though at times, Bernice was loud and a bit demanding and sometimes one may conclude that she has the power, but it seems that at these subtle moments, we notice that it was Jason who really had the power. And also, I noticed that there are times when Jason knelt down, he would get up sometimes without Bernice telling him so. And there were other times, when Bernice was in control, I believe it was at time that she started breaking down all the stereotypes that Jason's character has. If I recall, I believe this happened when she portrayed the black and Asian women.

Both of Bernice and Jason characters seem to be vulnerable and they were not totally immune from the misconceptions they had of people in different racial/cultural groups. It is interesting how that comes out in the performance.
