Subject: Sander Berge - the Silva effect

I have to say, I was most underwhelmed by the signing of Berge, in light of us losing Palhinha in particular. All my prior viewings of Sander at Sheff Utd and Burnley had given me the impression on someone with some clear quality, but games seemed to pass him by a bit if his team wasn't on top. I was far from convinced that he could come in and step up to anywhere near the all-action role that Palhinha had made his trademark. I thought we'd bought a cut price sub-thoroughbred who would go missing when things got tough.

Just shows what I know - hands up on this, he's been superb the last few games and is really making us miss the Portugese dymano less and less each week. Reading a lot of feedback and listening to those who've worked with Marco before, loads of credit to the manager as well as the player himself, as Sander's been a revelation in my eyes and fast becoming a bargain at what we paid for him. Marco places huge emphasis on workrate, but not just charging around aimlessly, it's very much targeted work at the moments that matter.

Deeper midfield is now a strength even after losing one of our top performers the last two seasons, especially as both Sander and Sasa are better distributors than Palhinha was. Great stuff and a pleasure to watch.
